EGG/Col_Pladoh - A serious question

The spell stinking cloud was developed as a result of someone cutting wind at the gaming table wasn't it?

I'm betting that this is the case. I just know it.

And the follow-up - who did it?

Actually, I'm more willing to bet that it was originally based on some sort of mustard gas or toxic gas attack from a WW One simulation wargame. Keep in mind how many things came to D&D by way of wargaming originally.

Gary has been quoted before (can't recall the source, but it has been through several interviews in the past) that many of the spell effects from the old Chainmail game and from the old D&D books were direct ports from effects such as catapults, ballistae, tank blasts, etc. Their blast radii, and areas of effect and such, came directly from such effects, which were already playtested.

Examples:

Lightning bolt = ballista
Fireball = catapult

That sounds more like cloudkill, especially given the "greenish vapours" bit.

What I REALLY want to know is, how long did it take EGG to notice that Tolkien was stealing his use of the word "halfling", and how come he made them change it to "hobbit"? Seems a bit unfriendly to me. I mean, so he didn't like Tolkien, but all this fuss over them using a made-up word is a bit over the top, isn't it?

Hong "and let's not get into that whole 'copyright Nazi' thing" Ooi

hey, just so ya know - I already debunked the "TSR copyrighted 'Nazi'" myth. It stems from the Indiana Jones RPG, which had cardboard miniatures. Each was labelled, some with copyright notices - but only the ones with a "name" character like Indy or Short Round, and the copyright notice was for lucasfilm, not TSR. I have the minis right here on my bookshelf.

Just bein' a public servant... ;)

HAW HAW!!!! You are such a LAME TROLL, "ColonelHardisson", if that is your REAL rank. Obviously you haven't learned anything since when you founded Kentucky Fried Chicken, or KFC or Burger King whatever it's called now. Did I mention ANYWHERE that TSR copyrighted Nazi? OF COURSE NOT!!!! They couldn't, because you can't copyright words, only IDEAS. And even if they wanted to, they couldn't copyright "Nazi" anyway, because Nazi is already copyrighted by HITLER!!!1! Put THAT in your Burger and smoke it, BUCKO!!!!!!

And what does TSR have to do with this topic anyway, since it's WIZARDS OF THE COAST that invented Dungeons and Dragons. I can prove this. Where did D&D come from? Some obscure minatures game called ... (wait for it) CHAINMAIL! And WHO INVENTED CHAINMAIL? That's right, WIZARDS OF THE COAST. I don't even know who this "TSR" is. It sounds like some no-name subsidiary of, I don't know, a TOY COMPANY or something. Or maybe it's an acronym from the old DOS days. One way or the other, this is the worst sort of blatant trolling I've ever come across on this newsgroup. The UNITED NATIONS will hear of this.

Hong "and what about those ents, eh?" Ooi
