Eldritch Sorcery

Which is easy for a DM to up a level or two.

I don't even think any warrant this, really. I am not chained to the everything-must-be-100%-on-level-with-everything-else wall that a lot of folks are. I think spells should be of somewhat varying degrees since they are created by different creators, some of whom might have uncovered eldritch secrets that give just that little bit of edge.

I'm more likely to bump a spell down that seems far too limited for the level its available (looking at spells like Minor Creation...)

Does anyone use it along side with Spell Compendium? How do they stack up?

I do. I find them both to be very usable with each other, and almost no overlap (only spells off-hand that come to mind are Summon Undead versions and a Fist of Stone spell that is in each. The SC version of FOS is slightly better, IMO.)

Eldritch Sorcery has some really creative spells in it. One lets you jump into artwork, one moves ongoing spell effects, there is one that lets you draw from a pool of weapons, each with their own distinct purpose and usage, and one that renders an enemy unable to speak or understand any language. Also you'll find updates of older spells like Dig, Distance Distortion, Glass to Steel, Irritation, and Sticks to Snakes among others.

How many high-level divination spells are in ES? (I'm always looking for more of those! :D)

Looks pretty weak on that score. From the wizard list, there are none above 4th level.

Eldtritch Sorcery

Hi folks, thanks for the interest in ES.

The goal for ES was to create a well-mixed set of spells for use in a wide variety of campaigns. As the developer and lead author on this book I certainly don’t make the claim that ALL of the spells in the book should fit into your campaign. That is a decision for a DM to make. For example, Wizard spells are not balanced by school so a specialist wizard (depending on the specialty) could get a serious power-up using spells from the book without prior DM approval. I rather think that is the case with the Spell Compendium as well though ;).

In the book I do mention things to watch out for. There is no way to account for the vast number of prestige classes, special abilities, and feats available in other products. If you (as the DM) allow things to stack without watching them carefully players could probably abuse things.

All of these things said, I believe the Spell Compendium and ES are certainly compatible and both can be used together. Personally, I believe that any spells from a source outside the PHB should have DM approval. It just makes things a bit easier in the long run.

There are spells in both books that can, in certain circumstances, be abused. I believe that the spells in ES are set at the appropriate levels. A few might be a bit powerful, but in actual play some of the spells I have seen complaints about simply haven’t been that bad.

Spells in ES range from pure damage spells to spells designed more for use in role-play heavy campaigns.

Special Note: We do have a Tome of Artifacts scheduled to come out in November/December ( I believe). This is a book developed by Ari Marmell that includes heavily detailed artifacts as well as ways to introduce them into a campaign. Many of the artifacts are very interesting, in other words, not all of them are simply powerful weapons.

PS. It is difficult to write with a 3-year-old singing in the background. If something didn't make sense I'll try to check the thread again later.

Patrick,

I think you did find, bad singing and all. Certainly agree both Spell Compendium and Eldritch Sorcery are very complementary. Another one to consider to add (just cause I like spells) is of course The Complete Book of Eldritch Might. Great resource for any arcane spell thrower worth their salt.

Agreed. That's my other favorite third party spell resource. Not only a lot of good spells, but I really dig that alternate bard. Add in some good PrC's and magical locales, and you got it.

Ah, if I could only play a magic-user of some sort...

The Complete Book of Eldritch Might and Eldritch Sorcery make the perfect complements to the Spell Compendium and PHB. I use them as my primary source of NPC spells these days, just to keep my players on their feet...

Glad you liked spell legs. That was one of mine (along with rimeshatter). I can also speak highly of paper tigers (not one of mine) and virtually every other spell in this book.

How much of ES is OGC?

Standard Necro designations. Everything except PI from prior Necromancer products, and proper names, that sort of thing. So in essence, it looks like 90%+ of the whole volume.
