Eldritch; Who's Played it/What Are Your Thoughts?

I think it's especially important for a new fantasy RPG to be able to describe what it is. What makes it special? Why should I consider looking at yet another fantasy RPG? What makes the system what it is?

As I said, my initial reaction was likely unfair, considering the publisher.

What would I do? Emphasize the positive, as said above. Don't tell me what the game isn't - tell me what it is.

It's like those old Talislanta ads - "No elves..." Okay, we get there's no elves, so what do you have?

In this case they do go on to describe something about the system in positive terms, but whenever I see text like that I read it as a not-so-subtle jab at D&D, and that colours my first impression of the game.

I absolutely agree and that was my impression as well. Commentary that starts out of the gate with "not D&D" as the game's supposed major selling point stands out as a trouble sign to me. It speaks to inexperience and lack of objectivity on the author, which often gets reflected in the work.

I may pick it up and take a look, but those quips gave me cause for concern.

I would've said what the game is, not what it isn't. If "restrictive archtypes" is a swipe at D&D, then it's like saying "the most popular rpg in the world? We're not it." I mean, hurrah for bucking the trend, but alot of people like restrictive archtypes.

I think more importantly, it fails to perceive how non-original a feature this is. Sure, the biggest game on the block uses classes, but dozens of fantasy RPGs put out over decades now eschew classes.

I have a question for anyone who has the book:

What's the spellcasting system like in terms of how much fuel the caster has? Is this a system where you can sling out spells left and right or are you going to have to be conservative?

Good question. I'd like an answer on it too.
