The other Tolkienesque classic of the round! (I don’t know if the hobbit can escape this time)

wood elf.

I never really got hobbits. I'm not a fan of short races but I always preferred gnome.

and braided river gypsies, well...

Got to support my halflings on this one... but elves are gonna be tough to beat, so I think this is the end of the hobbit crusade.

Go Halflings!

4e halflings are the first incarnation of the race I'd consider playing. Also, elves are just the thin-blooded descendants of the true elves (aka eladrin).

I very much like wood elves when they're properly separated from their holier-than-thou high elf kin.

... but I think that halflings could branch out to fill the elves' cultural niche more easily than vice versa, so I'm going to have to vote for them.

EDIT: Actually, thinking further about the idea of riverboat-Traveller or tunnel-rat wood elves, I have come to the conclusion that the above paragraph is completely wrong, and am rather glad that the elves are winning by a landslide regardless of my vote.

I see it the other way around. Unless you think early elves began their existence with vast magical and scholarly knowledge and great population centers, only later for some them to say, "F this, I wanna go camping!"

Actually I do!
The 'real' elves are beings of pure magic coming from the Feywild. They only took on humanoid form after watching other humanoids for a while and thinking it might be fun to try walking around in physical form for a while. Or something like that ;)
