[ELH] Question concerning multiclassed casters

Thanks, Macbrea - that's what I was afraid of.

So I guess this means that a Ftr10/Wiz10 who wants to take another level of wizard is wasting his/her time - that character will never have access to 6th level spells.

Does anybody know why this restriction exists?

Is there something really wrong with looking up Wiz11 in the Player's Handbook and using the non-Epic rules at this point? It _seems_ like it should be pretty straight-forward.

No. The spell progression stops at caster level 20, not character level 20. Basically, the charts for spells perday in the PHB ar enot extended beyond 20th level.

The 10/10 fighter/wizard can gain more levels in wizards and gain spells as normal. When his caster level becomes 20 at 30th level (assuming his next ten levels are in Wizard) that his spells will stop.

A few points about taking those sorcerer level 16-20

1. You will increase your effective caster level by one each time, increasing range, duration, spell penetration and possibly damage.

2. You will increase you familiars abilities (which you previously mentioned).

3. You will get the sorcerer's HD and skill points.

4. You will get epic BAB and save bonuses.
So it is incorrect to say the ONLY thing that happens is your familiar get better.

In one of our campaigns the increased spell penetration alone is worth the characters weight in gold. That DM gives high SR's.

All correct...but what he would *not* get are the bonus feats for being an epic sorcerer, meaning he has a long 5 level stretch where going up levels in his primary class does him next to no good at all compared to, say, going up levels in a prestige class that he qualifies for.

He could take those 5 levels of sorcerer for +1 BAB every 2 levels, +1 saves every 2 lvls, +1 caster level, +1d4 hp/lvl, 2+int skill points/lvl

...or...

he can take a prestige class and get +1 BAB every 2 levels, +1 saves every 2 lvls, +1 caster level, +1d4 hp/lvl, 2+int skill points/lvl plus whatever nifty abilities the prestige class gives you. As a 20th level archmage I'm sure he qualifies for one or two of them.
