[ELH] The Epic Spellsword (ideas)

I guess I miss something very simple, but why does the epic progression start at class level 21 instead of class level 11?

Mostly because I was thinking 'character level 20 = epic' and not 'class level 10 = max'. Subtract 10 from all levels for the correct numbers.

I see now how these things get in the manuscripts...

Another thread got be thinking. What abilities would be fitting for a Spellsword that are truely epic? Maybe the ability to cast other spells (like fireball) through the sword. THis is Epic, let's make it really epic.

Spellsword Penetration [Epic]
Your studies of magic ...gain a bonus on your caster level check to beat a creature's spell resistance equal to the difference between the enhancement bonus of your weapon and the target's Damage Reduction (if any). This bonus only applies to spells cast using the Channel Spell ability.

According to the Tome and Blood book, Channel Spell is a Supernatural ability, thus it bypasses any spell resistance the opponent might have.
A channeled 'spell' is actually a supernatural effect.
Therefore, this feat is not necessary.

I never realized that. THat just made that power a heck of a lot better. Thanks!! :)

Hmmm. I don't know that I buy that, since the language says 'cast a spell through her weapon as she attacks with it'. The ability to cast the spell at the same time as attacking is Supernatural, but I see no indication that the spell itself becomes anything other than a spell.

I think Supernatural was chosen because it was the only category that made sense. it's clearly not Extraordinary as it deals with magic, but to make it Spell-Like would mean that it incurred an AoO and could be dispelled...that leaves Supernatural.

Anyway, I've bounced the question to the Sage, so we'll see what he has to say. Since he actually worked on the book, he might be able to clear up the actual intent...

Maybe. It says: "...the spellsword can cast a spell through her weapon (melee or ranged) as she attacks with it. This is a supernatural ability", which may imply that it is the channeling part that is a supernatural effect, not the channeled spell itself, in which case I have been mistaken.
If so, I think that fact should have been pointed out more clearly (such as: the channel spell is still a spell, must penetrate SR etc).

Perhaps they identified the ability as supernatural to point out that it doesn't need a Concentration check to use in melee, I don't know.

As it is now, I do allow my (one) spellsword player to use it as a supernatural ability.

The Sage has been quite silent - how long does it usually take to get a response?

I found out that I'd been unduly strict in the spells that could be cast through the sword - I just recently found the FAQ answer where he clarifies that rays and other ranged touch attacks work. I was going by 'it's targeted if it says 'Target' in the description.'

My Spellsword player is quite happy now.

I actually have an epic campaign with a Wiz6/Ftr8/Sps13 in it. Using an extrapolated version of that strange 1st to 10th-level prestige class, I have recently given him Channel Spell IV.

He usually (read:always) uses a quickened true strike followed by four channeled lesser sonic orbs (from the same book). That is a Huge amount of damage. That player also uses Power Critical with his masterworked mercurial greatsword (beefed up by a greater magic weapon spell) to do silly amounts of damage.

Lucky for me, as the DM, he can only do it once per day, which means that I usually throw in a lot of disguised-looking-more-dangerous-than-what-I-am-creatures/NPCs at the group to flush out that dangerous attack, not to ruin any climatic fights later on.

But I think it is a great concept, but it does make the ranger and the fighter envy him sometimes. But as a wizard, he is pretty non-descript at these high level games.

Ah, so you interpreted Channel Spell the other way...I decided that when it said you could do X amount of lower-level spells, it didn't mean at the same time - which lowers the potential damage value but increases the utility of the ability.

The various orb spells are absolutely sick for a spellsword, because they scale up considerably more by caster level than, say, a shocking grasp.

On the Multiple Attack feat...

A few ways you could do it and make it less powerful -

First, base it off of an attribute. Say, it lasts a number of rounds equal to your Int modifier.

Second, each time you take the feat, you get an additional round it lasts. Take the feat once, it lasts two rounds, et cetera.

If you're sold on it being level dependant, you could make it add a number of extra rounds equal to Spellsword level divided 4 or 5.

I would make the Spellsword Focus give +2/+4/+6... seems more consistent IMO.

Very nice write up though, I like it very much! :)
