Since I did not forsee the furvor this inquery would cause I guess I will ask this post be removed. rpace and many of the others have good points, but it is obviously an offense to post this here.

In the future I will refrain from doing so. Sorry to all who felt the offer and notice unfair.

Shane Garvey,

Publisher - Emerald Press.

I think you HAVE done something wrong. Not horribly wrong, nor am I angry. It is a common issue that I've seen over and over. And, like I said before, I AM trying to help you as well as amateur artists.

You asked for "professional quality" images for no money. That's wrong. I'm not being rude. I'm telling it like it is.

If you has said "we want to showcase amateur art around certain themes (bards, war etc) in a free pdf publication". I would have not said a word. But you didn't. No, what you are asking for is professional work for free. So you can make money off of professional images. For free. No expense to you. Not cool. Its wrong.

>>You would be just sitting around drawing for free anyway! That's what artists do...right!?.<<

Wrong. That is what amateurs do. Pros get paid. For a reason. They are pros. Artists who are not good enough yet, work their asses off to get to be good enough to be pros. And get paid. Yes, if this is an amateur forum publication, GREAT!!!! I definitely encourage those who want practice to cut their teeth on these assignments. But that isn't what these guys want. These guys are selling other folks talent for no compensation except exposure...which is overrated.

You want to work in this field or any other? Have good enough samples to be hired. Get those samples into the hands of as many art directors as you can find. When you are good enough, you get hired. It REALLY is that simple.

Dirty industry secret: Art Directors DO NOT HAVE TIME to look at other publications. They are some of the busiest folk in this industry. Why do I know this? Because I've worked with dozens upon dozens of ADs. And I ask questions. So the exposure = compensation, I'm sorry, is not true.

Hell, if Emerald said, "we can't afford much, but we offer $10.00 per illo" (which is ungodly steal for artwork)... I would have no beef at all. But they did not. So yeah, something WRONG is being perpetrated here. Certainly an innocent mistake on Emerald's part, I'm sure.... but it is still a mistake.

It is not an offense. I'm not offended.

Your original post is simply bad business.

Learn from this post, change your language and go on with your worthwhile project.

Do not remove this post, this discussion is extremely important. Not only for artist and writer freelancers... but especially for start-up companies.

Tough crowd.
