Eminence grise

Funny -- this is my father's favorite painting at the MFA. I remember him telling me the story behind it when I was a kid. I make a point of viewing it whenever I'm there.

This painting by Savery is the one that evokes D&D for me. It's a dark forest with a sort of "adventuring party" (a hunting party, actually) making their way through the trees. The cool tower on the island in the middle of the river is my idea of a fantasy castle!

Never seen that one. Thanks for the link!

The Eminence Gris in my campaign is a poet by the name of Riechus. One of the players met him and goes by to pump him for prophetic visions of the future. He has no idea what he really does. ;)

Not much activity here (it's been a long time since I DMed, and I haven't written up any eminences grises in a long, long time), so I just wanted to plug Wild Gazebo's thread on inspiring paintings here in the General Discussion forum. Good stuff.

Nifty. Exactly my period of choice.

Now where's the hi-res image for Kord's sake? 800 by 800 can't be big enough to show off the detail!

I don't know, but when you look at it "live", the painting has a certain magic to it: the longer you look, the more animals you start to see lurking in the trees and in the shadows. Every time I visit the MFA, I find something new in that painting!
