Hiyas!

What do you think, does Empower Spell increase only the (d10) or the (d10+Caster Level) when applied to the False Life spell?

How many temporary hit points do you receive when you cast the spell?

1d10 + caster level.

Is "number of temporary hit points" a random variable numeric effect of the spell? Certainly - for a 10th level caster, you receive a random number between 11 and 20.

Therefore, "number of temporary hit points" qualifies for the multiplier from Empower.

If the spell stated "You receive a number of temporary hit points equal to your caster level (max 10). In addition, you also receive 1d10 temporary hit points. These effects stack." ... or something like that, then there are two numeric effects, only one of which is variable.

But the way it is phrased, there is one numeric effect, and it is variable.

Ok, thanks! :)

Now, bear in mind that there are those who disagree.

But I feel that the Magic Missile example given in the feat supports it completely.

And it's also the basis for 3E Simulacra Wars, so it can't be bad :)

Also Hyp the dicription talks about cure spells that are xd8+lvl so it proves the point.

Ah - is that in the 3.5 PHB? I haven't seen a hard copy yet, and the example isn't in the SRD.

Fantastic! It's good to know it's written down in black and white at last.

They list cure spells, but there isn't a specific example about the caster level being multiplied or not. But it probably makes sense this way, since the feat speaks of a rather general effect increase, not just a partial, as long as the spell qualifies with having a variable numeric component.
