EN Milestones

I had found Eric's site back when it was still new, and had been going to view it everyday since I found it, devouring every bit of information I could about the new third edition. I knew and retained so much information that I knew most of the rules by the time I grabbed my PHB at my FLGS on the day it came out. I remember ordering one of every core rulebook form amazon.com and then going to the FLGS on the day they arrived, just so I could have them immediately (I gave the ones I ordered to a good friend of mine). In fact, I gave a bunch of my players their PHB.

When Eric was closing down, I was really sad. I wrote him an email expressing my thanks for the website ... I had actually written two emails, but my gf said the first one was a big too clingy and sad. And to my amazement, Eric wrote back and was pretty positive. Heck, I get a buzz whenever Eric remembers me because it's crazy to think I have some name recognition.

Thank you eric, for leading my to third edition, and giving me that year of anticipation and joy.

And then Morrus took over, and he did a great job, going beyond the original scope of the original site. I owe Morrus more than that though, because when 50megs.com crapped out and practically ruined the Malls & Morons website, he stepped up and offered to host it for me; and so, for a long time (until I told Morrus to go ahead and get rid of it), Malls & Morons belonged to EN World. Thank you Russell, for keeping it going for so long. I remember announcing its release in these very forums and getting a positive response. In fact, I've never heard anythng negative about Malls & Morons, it's always been well received.

You know, I never said anything, but I always felt guilty here at EN World. When the server drive was there, I had no job and couldn't give any money. When Chairman Kaga died, I didn't know who he was, just the stories I heard. Every time there was a drive (2 in recent memory, if memory serves me right), I couldn't afford to give. I felt like a mooch.

Crazy times, you know. I don't post often at EN World, as much as I would like. But I remember all the changes from the first message boards to the current incarnation. I want to say, thanks Eric and Russell. And thanks to everyone who ever said a kind word about me or had something good to say about Malls & Morons; you're all in my heart.

Thank you, Eric and Morrus!

My first encounter with this community came in early 2000. I had just read something on the Wizards site where Ryan Dancey or Jonathan Tweet said something like, "I can't say any more. I don't want to wake up tomorrow and see it splashed all over Eric Noah's page." So I immediately knew I had to track down this Eric Noah fellow and his page.

So much to remember. Bugaboo, Bill Door, Forgotten and Ruin and CZ. All the other luminaries, so many of them still here.

Some aren't. I still miss Angelsboi, even though I probably never exchanged a single post with him.

Eric, Russ, all the mods and contributors and people who occasionally fix things, thank you!

Huh. It certainly has been awhile, huh?

I found out about EN World because, right at the time 3rd Edition was coming out, I was [and still am, though not nearly as active] a regular poster on the Bioware boards. They were, at the time, developing Neverwinter Nights alongside the final stages of 3rd Edition's development.

So, while debating the way the rules were being included in a rather successful computer game, I decided I should hang out here, a bit, to figure out what the rules actually were. I don't think I posted much, if at all, in those days (in fact, my login from the far distant past seemed to have expired by the time I returned), but I read everything here voraciously.

It was also here that I discovered the "casting call" for playtesters for the 3E revision of the Forgotten Realms.

A group of people that I knew from an in-the-planning-stages NWN Persistant World - The Band of the Red Hand: The Vale of Lost Souls - decided that we'd make a great playtesting group, so we all joined the RPGA, we submitted our group information, and we were accepted as an initial playtest group. We played a few sessions - I think we were playing one of the Return to ... modules, to see how well FR characters stacked up against Core challenges - and then, we were accepted into the next round of playtesting.

We were given new rules, new regional feats (a concept I immediately fell in love with), new domains to try out. It was awesome. I still remember looking over the various "Initiate of ..." feats and thinking to myself, "Someone who takes the Initiate of Corellon feat gains a +2 unnamed bonus to Intelligence or Strength; someone who takes Initiate of the Red Knight gains Weapon Proficiency and Focus (Longsword)?* These are supposed to be balanced how?"

I was so proud, when the FRCS came out, to notice two things:

1. The absence of anything resembling the Intiate of ... feats
2. My actual, own name in the credits as a playtester

How freakin' cool is that?

Thanks, Eric, Henry, PCat, Morris, Morrus, Darkness, Plane Sailing, Hyp, and the rest of the Admin / Mod team for an amazing website and a fantastic community.

Thanks, Eric, for getting this whole ball of wax started.

* The Initiate of Corellon example is accurate. I don't recall some of the others I compared it to in my playtest notes, so I made up the RK example. Hey, it's been awhile, eh? :)

I first found Erics site probably around October or November of 99... I Had just recently heard about 3E and was rather disillusioned. In face I think my exact quote was "Oh yeah that's no big suprise, of course Wizards is coming out with 3E they've come out with like 5 editions of Magic." I was not looking forward to it I mean what the hell did this card game company know about role playing. I tracked down Erics site though and began getting quite excited about this third edition. About 2 months after 3E came out I found the group that I still play with in the gamers seeking gamers forum.

Lets see. I've browsed this site and read the forums for about 30% of my entire life. It has been an interesting experience, the people here are very different from my casual computer geek friends, in a good way.

Except for Eric, Morrus, Piratecat, Michael Morris, Henry, Shadow of my... eh Darkness and the current gang of moderators, helpers etc, I'd like to thank Muaddib, Angramainyu, Wisp, Nemmerele (el-nem...something) and everyone else who helped this place in the past. Cheers, wherever you are. :)

I still remember coming to the site right after some sample armor stats were listed. Dang I was so excited to see actual 3E rules samples! Thanks a bunch Eric!

Can't remember when exactly I found Eric's site, but I remember checking it pretty much daily for new info. That was all I did back then, though.
Then Eric 'quit' and we moved to EN World. I think I pretty much stopped coming here, checking the site maybe once a week or so.

Then I came back when I saw somebody looking for the stats for the iconic characters in the PHB and there was a link to a site, which had another link to the game being played here. I think I read most of the (darn long) Iconics game in one night.
That's about the time Gnomeworks recruited for his Psionicle game. I already had an account so I could play You B!astard (I think that's how it's written), so I joined in. Back then there was just an In-character forum, not a whole category.
Slowly I started migrating to other parts of the forum (there was one time that the posts you made at the YB! forum and/or the IC forum didn't count in your post count, can't remember exactly).

It's been great. And though I don't post too much outside the IC part, I still lurk around the other parts. So thanks to everybody who's made it possible over the years, and especially Eric and Morrus for being the big cahunas.

I don't remember when I first discovered Eric's old site, but I do know how:

I had started visiting and posting on the WotC boards after 3E came out. But I was a little put off by the attitudes of some of the posters, and the damn things kept crashing and would remain down for 2-3 days or longer.

One day, someone from Eric's site (I think it was Bugaboo) posted a thread at WotC about getting paid to DM. It was a troll, but it was hilarious, esp. some of the responses. Someone on the thread mentioned that there was a thread on Eric's site where everyone was having a good laugh at the expense of the WotC posters fooled by the troll.

So I went over to Eric's site, and I liked the atmosphere and the sense of community right away. I immediately decided, "I want to party with these guys and gals -- they know how to have fun." So I signed up and have been coming back ever since.

Thank you, Eric, for starting it all. Thank you, Russ, for keep it going. And thank you everyone else (you know who you are) for making EN World the great place that it is.

(I told myself I wasn't going to cry)

Milestones: meeting many people fome around here in person at gen con two years ago, and at gencon UK that same year. I made some friends here. AlSiH2O, Hound, Dextra, Teflon Billy, Sniktch are some of the finest people on the planet.

Besides I think Eric is responsable for many yards of bookshelf, must be his librarian gene trying to spread :)

Thank you muchly, Eric, for all the work you've done (and still do!), and for starting things that have endured.

Cheers!
