I think this is a terrific idea. ENW is in a rare position to make something like this work.

I would quite happily pledge a dollar a week or whatever for quality 5E or system-neutral content written by the likes of [MENTION=1288]Mouseferatu[/MENTION], but a crunch-heavy Pathfinder article would be of little use unless it contained some universally applicable stuff (a nice map, for example).

I've never used Patreon. How will the funding *actually* work?

I would definately subscribe for 5e material, but no really need for pathfinder material, but I understand why you can't do 5e stuff yet

Yeah, I get that. Ideally it would be two totally separate subscriptions where you choose which game, but Patreon doesn't have that functionality. Still all very much just an idea.

What is interesting is that since I mentioned this I've had:

Queries about writing submissions: nearly 40

Queries about the editing or layout positions: 0

You can see why the latter are so valuable! Good editing/admin/layout people are damn hard to come by!

I love the idea. Coming from the old Silven Crossroads days, I love me some good ezines... but this isnt an ezine...its articles.

I like Patreon, and I think its an interesting model for artists, writers, and bloggers... but I dont know if it works for ENWorld. I mean it seems that ENWorld gets nothing out of it.

You are also splitting the community between pathfinder and 5e. Like some have said, they will come for one and not the other.

Ezines are dead. And I hate to say that. I wish the Gygax Mag best of luck. People want instant content, daily content. They want to be informed and entertained. There are 5 million websites out there, give me a reason to visit yours.

Personally, I love the Kinja sites, io9, sploid, gawker, lifehacker, etc. Sure most of it is random info dumps from the various internets, but its topical, updated constantly, and relevant to my interests.

My suggestion, forget the subscription model for now. the 50 writting submissions should show you people want to contribute. Get some good editors to filter and focus these ideas, and post articles like crazy. Good editors (as you say are gold) can keep topics timely, and up to date and relevant, and keep the site fun.

Generate revenue through ads, and save the subscription model for published materials, new adventures, APs, in depth articles, and treat the subs as Early Access members, give em special forum access, alpha, beta, design notes, etc.

There is so much talent here on ENWorld, that with the right editors and the right system setup, this site could explode.

I'm not sure whether [MENTION=1]Morrus[/MENTION] wants us to fill the thread with this discussion, but doesn't the (loud) craving for the return of Dungeon and Dragon seem to suggest otherwise?

While people want NOW NOW NOW they also want some way to go back and find the wheat amidst the chaff.

I download (and would gladly pay for) the Threshold magazine about Mystara. I'd also like a place to compile quality material about 5e. Like one guy (Canonides, I believe, on the rpg.net forum) who is writing an article about reverse engineering races so you can more reliably create your own.
