EN World RPG Book Club for June

Crothian

First Post
People wanted some hints for the game. I was going to give some like Old School. But it would have been a little misleading. Of course another hint would have been the abbreviation for the threads which is ENWBC.

For June the EN World RPG Book Club's choice is Og, Unearthed Edition. It is written by Robin Laws and put out by Firefly Games. The book comes in print and PDF formats.

The purpose of the RPG Book Club is to acquire, read, and hopefully play this game. And then we discuss the hell out of it here!! This is a new edition so if you also have the old one and can talk about the differences in the games that would be great. I never got to read the first version of the game.

It is a fun and comical game. But it also does a few things different. It is the only game I know that have rules and what words your character knows.

sweet... I've been looking at this game since I"ve heard good things about it...

I won't have the book until media mail gets here, but the pdf is on my laptop right now and getting ready to read it...

fyi, ipr has og on special, 16 95 for the print copy and the pdf

This thread prompted me to pick it up -- it'd been on my list to check out for quite some time. Read about half at work today. Looks like a lot of fun; it would make a great late-night pickup game at Gencon, etc.

Man I wish I would have known that. Paid about that much after shipping from a1books.com with no pdf.

Looking forward to reading this when it arrives.

sorry mang... hoped to get it posted fast enough to save some people money:(

all in all I'm enjoying reading it right now... thinking it might become an impromptu late night game at gencon this year ala kiz's kamb game, if I"m up to adding another game to my schedule

I love the book club idea, Crothian! It seeks to provide interesting discussion while injecting a bit of non-d20 gaming into the forums.

I've read and played Og. It's a terrific game for when you want to just be silly with a bit of structure - not unlike Toon in that respect. I think it could get old fast if it wasn't just a one shot thing to run every few months (at the most frequent), but as a one shot it had us laughing our butts off. The mechanics that focus on just how damn stupid the cavemen are, in particular, brought a lot of laughs.

Ultimately, though, it was the limited vocabulary that made the game memorable. I still remember being unbelievably impressed at how quickly the players found ways to communicate with just a few simple words.

I'd see it as a great game to fill in the gaps when people can't all make it to the regular scheduled game. Characters are really easy to create and the limited vocabulary helps everyone get into character. More a bit later after work. :D

I really enjoy the idea of advancing by learning new words. That is creative. At the end of an adventure the group decides what one new word they would come up with. And that is also a form of currency.

Give it a try and we'll find out!! :D

It is a very simple using a single d6. There are character templates for lack of a better word. They are kind of like classes each offering a bit of a focus of the character and a unique ability. But there is no progression in them or advancement like we find in level systems.
