En Worlders from Austin TX

Went to Consol High School? You might have known my sisters-in-law, Kristen or Kim Williams? Bigtime into choir? Not likely you knew my wife (the oldest sister) as she graduated in '91. I had a bunch of other friends there too -- Tim Mattis, Greg Richards, Randy Shumway (although he's probably too old)...

Oh you bet I went to Consol. Although I left in '95 I actually would have been class of '97, so some of the names are familiar, but no one I knew well. (Was Tim a swimmer?) I was a year ahead of Jodi Shumway, (Randy's sister?) -- we had a class together in Jr. High.

(Drop me a PM, we can compare notes. :) )

Send me an email jdyal at wowway dot com; my community supporter account just expired recently so I can't PM anymore. Tim played football, actually, but Jodi was Randy's younger sister. Like you said; small world!

No one's mentioned our FLGS yet so I will:

Dragon's Lair is a nice shop with friendly staff and atmosphere. They have a location in Austin (Lamar) and Pflugerville (if you're staying in North Austin). Definitely worth checking out.

If you want to go out and watch a movie, check out the Alamo Drafthouses (downtown and Anderson Lane). They serve beer and food during the movie. Funky atmosphere. They rock. :)

And if you change your mind about grabbing a beer, check out the Gingerman on 4th street. Dozens of beers on tap and a backyard beer garden.

If folks try to put together a group meet or anything, I'd be game. I'm in Houstopolis, but I've been looking for an excuse to get over to Austin in the near future.

My wife and I were in Austin a couple of years ago. We'll never forgetthe guy that was riding around on a bicycle wearing pink thong underwear. Yes - that was *all* that he was wearing. Indeed. Strange.

That'd likely have been Leslie, one of the...ah...'local personalities'. A fixture, if you will. A very scary fixture for some. ;)

And Funky...you don't play d20? I'm shocked! Shocked and appalled! ;) You know we like you anyways. :D

Austin is IN Texas!

Now, now! The beauty of Austin is that you can wear a cowboy hat and birkenstocks, ride a 10-speed down the middle of the road and vote for George Bush all at the same time. That's what makes Austin unique.

And if ya'll are getting together, I'd definitely like to game, drink, game and drink or just drink.

Don't forget Thor's Hammer up on North 183. Great place to sit around and game...usually. Gets a little crowded.

And Great Hall Games in the Dobie at UT. Best place to find minis in the city. Especially modern/wargame minis.

And on North 183, right near Thor's Hammer! Watch a movie, get loaded, go play games. What can be more convenient?

I miss Austin. Haven't been back since I left in May of 1995.

Don't think you want to take a 12 year old down to Sixth Street, but I'm sure there's still lots to do in the "Live Music Capital of the World." I used to work in the tower at UT. Nice view from that thing, even at the middle levels. My daughter was four when we left, but she always liked Zilker Park (especially the train) and seeing the marble cows at the Arboretum (just a few statues at an over-priced shopping plaza, but a four-year-old is easily entertained). Barton Springs is nice to swim in (it's a naturally heated stream near or in Zilker Park).

I guess for a 12-year-old, Schlitterbahn (just south of Austin in New Braunfels) might be the best bet. It was ranked the #1 Waterpark in the Country on one of those Travel Channel "Top 10 ---" shows.
