Encounter ideas?

Of course wyvers would be a bit problematic when they grow up. How hard you'd say young wyvern would be to take to longish sea-trip?

If your ranger PC has already won the wyvern's trust and friendship, and the wyvern hasn't yet grown to full size, than it shouldn't be too difficult. The biggest problem would probably be convincing the captain and the crew that it's safe to bring it along. Some of the crewmembers might be so scared of it, they try to kill it while it sleeps. It all depends on how big it's grown by then.

Yep, just wondering how hard I should make it, if these things occur. Do wyvers by nature dislike large bodies of water, how much it weights, that kind of thing.

If you or others have more ideas, keep coming, I have tomorrow to plan and write actual stats.

Obviously, the ocean isn't a natural habitat for wyverns, but I wouldn't suppose they really have anything against it either. The ranger needs to make sure to keep it well fed though! ;)

How much it weighs depends on how old/how big it is. There's a table in MM that shows the approximate weight of a creature of any given size.

Some other quick encounter ideas:

Scraggs or merrows (aquatiq trolls or ogres) attack the party are crossing a river. They attempt grapple PCs to drag them into the water to drown them.

A hungry dire animal with a suitable CR.

Ghouls and ghasts lurking around that abandoned temple you mentioned.

Phasespiders or ethereal filchers are always good for random encounters; they can pop out anywhere and they're motivation for doing so is pretty clear. (food and greed!)

Come on, EN-worlders; posts! We can all use some good encounter-ideas from time to time, right? ;)

Thanks Jolly, I always forget those cool etherial using things, which are not undead. And I used to have such love fore phase spiders when we still playing ad&d (not so much as a player, however).

Ghouls and ghasts with pseudonatural creature template in this case. ;)
(that's from tome and blood, alienist). Ok, missing villangers have been turned to those creatures after their grimsome deaths. They are holding the spirits, so they are unable to leave to me revitalized to their next Gift (life). Main enemy is human bard, who came to temple to learn about it's history from it's art, and whatever else was findable there, but he got possesed by presence of evil (weak Horror). He has about 12 minions if players go there immediatly after hearing village's blight.

Now this entity is using this quite innocent man to do Unmaker's work. It's goal is to steal gifts of these humans, and from their energy, create pathway for it to manifest more fully.

Strange ripples to etherial have attracted attention of phase spider family with their young ones.

Ullon ((assassin god, one of evil ones)) serving rogue is also hanging in area, trying to find some loot and evil to do. She or he might pull some nasty thing to PC:s.

or something like that. :)

I go sleep now, but don't let that stop the ideas, thank you so much. :)
