First Post
I've made this Encounter Sheet because one of my players complained about writing and erasing his character sheet during encounters and ruining it.
The idea was to have a simple and small sheet (and almost disposable) to keep track of the HP and all the things used during encounters, so the character sheet remains almost untouched until level up.
Last session we playtested it at my table and worked quite fine. We found some flaws already, and fix them. Still, I would love to get a more large playtest and feedback from those who found it usefull.
So, I present you my sheet:
BASICS:
- All the CIRCLES (including the box for Temp. HP) have to be erased after a SHORT REST (and extended rest).
- All the SQUARES (including the box for Current HP, but not the dark-lined squares) have to be erased after a EXTENDED REST.
- The dark-lined squares and the lines are changed only when leveling up (or when needed).
- Four Encounter Sheets fit in a A4 sheet (landscape). Just print and cut.
DETAILED OVERVIEW:
The sheet is divided in three columns of related content:
- The first column it's all about Health: Nothing special to say about this column, it's like any character sheet: max HP, bloodied value, a big box for current HP, another box for temporary HP, a line for your resistances (to have them right on sight when you take damage), a line for your mods to saving throws (previously this line was for benefits when bloodied, but only the dragonborn was taking use of this line, so I decided to change it for this one, but I'm not so shure if it is that usefull), healing surge value, healing surges per day and checkboxes for healing surges used, second wind and death saving throws failed.
- The second column it's all about Powers: Simple list to write all your powers, including attack powers, utility powers, class feature powers, and racial powers. Just put them in the correct list: encounter powers and daily powers*. Originaly this column had the utility powers appart, but that made the erasing after a short rest a bit more complicated, so I decided to put it this way.
- The third column it's for things related to milestones: checkboxes for milestones and action points (with a line for the additional effects when using an action point) and a list for the magic items that have encounter (circles) or daily (squares) powers*. Almost all this column is related to the milestones: the number of action points you can use is equal to 1 + # of milestones, and the magic item daily powers you can use are equal to 1 (or 2 or 3, depending on the tier) + # of milestones.
TIPS FOR CORRECT/BETTER USE:
- AFTER A SHORT REST, ERASE ALL THE CIRCLES (including the temporary HP box).
- AFTER A EXTENDED REST, ERASE ALL SQUARES AND CIRCLES (including the current HP box and the temporary HP box, but not the dark-lined boxes).
- All the "static" thigs (dark-lined boxes and lines) can be written in pen, for easier erasing after a short/extended rest.
- To be more organized you can write your utility powers seperated from the attack powers, writing your utility powers (and probably your class feature powers and racial powers too) beggining from the bottom of the list, and your attack powers beggining from the top. Another option is to use different colour-pens for the different tipes of powers (attack, utility, racial and class feature).
- If you have many powers (from your class or from magic items) that are immediate actions, you can highlight them in the sheet somehow (by writing a capital I, or IR and II on the side, for example) and put a paper clip on the sheet when you use one, to know that you used your immediate action of that round. At the end of your turn, take off the paper clip if you have it on your sheet.
- When you use an action point you have to check both, one square box and the circle "used this encounter" (wich has to be erased after a short rest).
- To see if you can use an action point, just check if you have less action points used than 1 + # of milestones, and that you don't have the "used this encounter" circle checked.
- To see if you can use a magic item daily power, just check if you have less magic items daily (squares) used than 1 + # of milestones (in heroic tier), 2 + # of milestones (in paragon tier), and 3 + # of milestones (in epic tier).
- If you check the milestone boxes with crosses, you can draw a diagonal line after each encounter (so a complete cross comes up after 2 encounters), and keep track of the encounters that way.
- If you are a claric or warlord, you can do draw a diagonal line every time you use your healing word/inspiring word class features (so a complete cross comes up after the 2 uses).
- If you are a paladin or cleric, you can write only "Channel Divinity" in one of the encounter powers lines, and keep track of all your channel divinity that way (no need to write them all separated and check them all when you use one, it's a waste of space).
- If you are a drow, you can use the same as above for your racial feature powers.
- If you are a paladin, you can write your Lay on Hands class feature in the daily powers list, and mark somehow (with a dot or lines after the name, for example) each time you use it, to keep track of the daily useage, and check the box when you reached your maximum that day.
- If you are a wizard, you can write both of your dailys in the same line, separated by a slash, and mark somehow (with a dot over the name or underlining it, for example) wich daily you have prepared, and check the box when you use it. If you don´t have enough space to write them both, you can just write "daily lvl #" on the daily power line, and check some where else what you have prepared. Another option is to write the daily you prepared in pencil, and re-write it if you prepare another one.
- If you are a wizard, you can do the same as above for your utility powers. If at some level you know an encounter utility and a daily utility, you can write the one you prepared on pencil in the corresponding list, and erase it if you prepare the other.
THINGS NOT INCLUDED (on purpose, because we track them in another practical way):
- Initiative.
- Current conditions & effects.
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS:
- Not enough room for encounter or daily powers at high levels if you choose all (or most of) your utility powers from the same type (encounter or daily).*
- Not enough room for your encounter or daily magic items.*
*Only playtested in heroic tier by now, so the quantity on each list is not definitive, and can be changed if another arrangement proves to be better. Anyway, this depends too much on the player's choice, and I don't know if there is some "correct number" for these lines.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope this sheet becomes usefull for you guys, and I look foward for your feedback and comments on how did this worked for you, and new ideas of how to improve it and make a better use of it. All your constructive ideas, comments and critics are welcome.
