Energy Attacks and Hardness

Do energy attacks bypass hardness? I know about the fractional multiplier to damage for the different energy forms when used on objects, but does the object's hardness get subtracted from the adjusted damage?

I thought I read somewhere in 3.0 that energy attacks bypassed hardness, but I can't find it anywhere in 3.0 or 3.5, so I'm wondering If I dreamed it up.

Also, does Hardness apply to damage from magic spells? If I cast magic missile at an animated object, does its hardness still apply to reduce the damage it takes?

From what I've read I see no reason why the object's hardness wouldn't apply in both circumstances, but again, I thought I read somewhere that it didn't.

Any help would be appreciated.

From the SRD:
Energy Attacks: Acid and sonic attacks deal damage to most objects just as they do to creatures; roll damage and apply it normally after a successful hit. Electricity and fire attacks deal half damage to most objects; divide the damage dealt by 2 before applying the hardness. Cold attacks deal one-quarter damage to most objects; divide the damage dealt by 4 before applying the hardness.
It's in the Carrying and Exploration section of the SRD, so that's probably where it is in the PHB as well.

And just to remind everyone, magic missile does not affect inanimate objects. It must be targeted at creatures.

... or the figments of a Mirror Image, if one accepts the FAQ's authority to make up new rules.

Of course, an Animated Object is a creature...
