Energy Drains & +ECL Races Question

Energy drain drains HD, which happens to be attached to class levels. ECL doesn't matter. So, once all your HD go, you are dead.

For example, say I have a 3rd level centaur fighter (3 ftr +7ECL Centaur = equivalent 10th level character).

Why do you have +7ECL for centaur? DMG page 22 has it as "Class levels + 5". A player in my campaign just made a centaur fighter last night. I told him he could make a 6th level character, and he went with a 1st level centaur fighter.

WotC FRCD Errata:

p. 288, Changes to Table 8–1 (Level Adjustments):
Aarakocra from +1 to +2
Bugbear from +3* to +4*
Centaur from +5* to +7*
Hobgoblin from +0 to +1
Hybsil from +1 to +2
Kir-lanan from +6* to +8*
Lizardfolk from +2* to +4*
Ogre from +5* to +8*
Shade(tt) from +2 to +5
Troll from +8* to +11*
Wemic from +7* to +8*
(tt) Character must be at least 5th level.

Trust me, with the stat bonuses, it's about right at +7.

FRCD = Forgotten Realms Campaign D...?

I looked at the DMG errata, and they don't list these changes there. I'm not disputing the validity of the newer adjustments. I'm just curious as to whether these changes have been adopted by most groups, or just FR campaigns, or what. Where can I get the errata that you reference?

I've just started allowing monsters as characters, and I want to make sure that I'm using the most balanced guidelines I can.

Thanks in advance for any help!

As I recall (without actually checking) many/most of those races are not listed in the DMG. Which would explain why they are not errata'd there.

.

Because the old DMG doesn't have ECL at all. ECL wasn't invented until the FRCS. Savage Species will probably have ALL of the ECL info for all of the monsters. And I bet the revised DMG will have ECL as well.

Whether or not it's referred to as "ECL", DMG page 22 has info on equivilent character level for playing various monsters. This is the info I was hoping to find errated as per the guidelines in FRCS, but it wasn't. It'll be cleared up in revision one way or the other, I'm sure.
