Well they are D20 System awards. And there's only one company that's allowed to make D&D compatible minis -- and that's WotC. I don't see this category really going anywhere. :)

hmm, being as i am thinking of making minis, can you define "d+d compatible?" i mean, can noone else make a goblin or dragon?

editing to point out i am not being smart with you, i am actually being very ignorant with you:)

If other companies decide to label their minis d20 (which could happen, I guess, if someone decides to make a d20 mass combat game), then I guess it's possible (but I'm sure more d20-license-savvy folk will tell us if I'm wrong). But we've yet to see it.

The D20 STL forbids miniatures from any other company but WotC. So there can be no miniatures category unless the license is changed.

That's basically what Eric said with the words rearranged. There isn't really another way to say it. :)

I think there was just a bit of room to misinterpret what Eric said, since the D&D license (like Kenzer has) and d20 license are somewhat different. Just out of curiosity, though, couldn't a company pay to have the D&D imprint on their minis, thus sort of circumventing what the d20 STL says? It would be a lot more expensive, I realize, but I'm just wondering from an academic standpoint.

You're only bound buy the d20 STL if you publsh something under it. But if you haven't published under the d20 STL, you don't eaxctly have any business being in the D20 System Awards.

OK. I have to admit to being confused a bit about the relation of this answer to my question, but I'll just take it as a "no."
