Enlarge Person Ring

First time poster.

pg285 DMG3.5 shows a suggested formula for
estimating the price for a use activated or
continuous spell effect item.

2000 gp x caster x spell level x (4, 2, 1.5, .5)

For a ring of Invisibility
2000 x 3 x 2 x 2 = 24,000 gp

but the DMG lists
2000 x 3 x 2 x 5 / 3 = 20,000 gp

For my ring of Enlarge Person
2000 x 1 x 1 x 2 = 4,000 gp

or with the 5 / 3 constant
2000 x 1 x 1 x 5 / 3 = 3,334 gp

Does this seem like a fair price?

No.

Those formulas are guidelines. They often fall apart, especially when the item gives a continuous bonus.

The *best* way to figure out a price is to use the formula and then compare the item that you've 'created' to other items listed at that price. If yours is significantly better, up your price a bit and compare it to other items at its level. Continue to do so until you find other magic items that seem to be 'worth' as much to an average PC.

I highly second that.

Take for example another ring that has a permanent spell equivalent. The 1st level Jump spell cast by a 1st level arcanist gives +10 on jump skills. The ring of jumping improved gives the same bonus, and costs 10,000 g.p. . The 1st level charm animals spell is also the equivalent of a ring of animal friendship, which costs 10,800 g.p. .

Your enlarge ring would thus more or less cost 10,000 g.p. .

That said... we all know the benefits that a fighter can gain from such a ring. He buys his gear as a medium size creature, then puts on the ring: the damage output of his weapon is treated as one size category larger, he gains a +2 bonus to Strength (that stacks with enhancement and inherent bonuses), and he gains 10 feet reach. A HUGE benefit. Give him a spiked-chain, and he can now swing at critters 5', 10', 15', and 20' away from him. With combat reflexes... *shudder* (note that he needs 15 base dex in that configuration, because enlarge gives -2 penalty to Dex and he needs 13 Dex for Combat Reflexes to work).

How much for that ring ?

For this variant item I might say:

For 3.0 enlarge, it may be in the ballpark. 50% growth, +2 Strength: similar to gauntlets of ogre power, around 4,000 gp -- say 5,000 gp for the more exotic bonus type.

For 3.5 enlarge person, it's underpriced. 100% growth, +2 Str, increased reach, increased damage dice. Of course, the altered 3.5 spell itself is probably too powerful for 1st level: nearly halfway to righteous might. I'd act as if it's at least 2nd level power, for 2000 x 2 x 3 x 2 = 24,000 gp or so.

Following jgsugden's suggestion, I want to estimate
a proper price for a "Use activation" or "continuous"
spell effect ring with the Enlarge Person (first level
spell) attached.

Here is the suggested formula.
2000 x 1 x 1 x 2 = 4,000 gp

Now we start comparing prices.

4,000 Counterspell ring.
>4K +2 Str, -2 Dex, -1 AC size, x2 reach.

8,000 Protection +2
>8K +2 Str, -2 Dex, -1 AC size, x2 reach.

18,000 Spell storing
<18K +2 Str, -2 Dex, -1 AC size, x2 reach.

Here is something else to consider.
pg 132 PHB3.5 describes the price for hiring a
spellcaster to cast spells on you.
pg 260 PHB3.5 allows Enlarge person to be used
with Permanency

5x9x10 = 450 (caster level 9 x Permanency x 10)
5x500 = 2500 (5 x XP loss)
1x1x10 = 10 (caster level 1 x Enlarge Person x 10)

2,960 gp for Perminant Enlarge Person cast on yourself.

Yes, but the permanent version has loooots of drawbacks that the ring doesn't have

Here is something else to also consider: one successful dispel magic against you (and they are quite common at higher levels) and your Permanent Enlarge Person is gone. Forever. The ring OTOH, is suppressed for a few rounds, after which you can re-activate it.

But hey, if you can convince your DM to give you an Enlarge ring for 2,000 - 4,000 g.p. after reading this thread, good for you.

pg285 DMG3.5 outlines that a bonus to a skill does not follow
the same formula as "Spell effect". There is a seperate formula
for "Skill bonus (competence)"

Bonus squared x 100 gp

So I would think that you could make:
400 gp for a +2 spellcraft headband
900 gp for a +3 spellcraft headband
1,600 gp for a +4 spellcraft headband
10,000 gp for a +10 spellcraft headband

Actually I think it would be real handy to have a headband of
arcane knowlege +2 for only 400 gp.

Or even goggles of spot +5 (binoculars, heh)
2,500 for a +5 to spot

I did some math and I don't think that it should be more
than a +3 item at 18,000, so what about the average
between a +2 and a +3, (8,000+18,000)/2
