ENnies 2003 Judges!

Also, is this for 2002 products only or up to a certain deadline this year? I would think it would be great for the judges to look at products that are coming out this year, too, not just last year's products. For example, looking at pre-release copies can do a lot to exposure for the company making the product and the awards ceremony itself.

There is another thread for this type of discussion; it's right next to this one.

*edit*

I'm withdrawing my name from consideration. Interested parties may check the discussion thread for my reasons.

I'd like to try being an ENnies judge. I think it'd be a great way to give back to my favorite D&D website and community.

The good:

Cat crap brownies for everyone at the GenCon ENnies ceremony!

My background: I've played and GM'd D&D since 1979. I stopped gaming in 1983, and didn't start up again until 1999. That break gives me some perspective....warped though it may be.

I have played 1st ed. AD&D, 2nd ed. (online only), and 3e. I have DM'd both 1st and 3rd editions. I have also played & GM'd other games, and I read a lot of games I never get to play.

I lurked on Eric's boards for a while, and finally registered and posted....a while ago. It's been so long I can't remember, but I can't imagine being a gamer today without EN World.

I love to read and I love to game. Those traits seem very desirous for this particular task.

I spend a lot of money on gaming materials, even on games I may never get to play. That breadth of reading material makes for a better gamer and, I think, a better judge.

I have a minivan, boxes, lot of tapes, and good relationships with the three closest post offices. If selected, I could be the "product distribution judge" and relieve others of that burden. I have extensive experience in shipping out "Orc and Pie" t-shirts after the last GenCon. My shipping skills are up to the task!

I would finally get another use out of all those critiquing skills I learned in college, but rarely get to use nowadays.

The bad:

Cat crap brownies for everyone at the GenCon ENnies ceremony!

Any questions? Just email me or post here and I'll respond. Thanks!

Qualifications:

1) The free time available to give nominees the attention they deserve.
2) Game review/critiquing experience.
3) Have read through hundreds of game books (ok, thousands).
4) Playtesting experience (but no d20 work this year).
5) Longtime dnd3e/EN World Member.
6) 20+ years gaming.
7) I would enjoy the challenge.

Thank you for your time and your possible consideration.

Hi, I'm Ryan Virtue (ColorGuyRy) of the moderately popular online comic Dungeons and Dorks (www.dndorks.com) Some of you may remember our humble hosting here on ENworld a little while back, or maybe some of you still read it at the new site. As the writer for DnDorks I've been creating original stories and aspects of the D&D world for quite some time, and I've been loving it.

My youth has prevented me from playing as long as some of the monster posters I've seen on the EN boards for some time, but I have been playing for a few years now and can't get enough. And though I haven't been an avid poster on the EN boards, I have been reading a lot of posts and news that happen around here, and have been avidly outputting creative D&D related material on my forum and site, not to mention the groovy ENworld IRC channel.

If it's not too apparent, I absolutely love to write, so this would be perfect for me. And because of my history with DnDorks, I'm proficient on task management and making dead lines (you don't know the meaning of a dead line until you're up at 3 in the morning looking for an artist because your old one quit and you've gotta' have a comic up in 4 hours, great fun that was :p)

Well, I think I've gone on long enough, looking forward to the ennies, and GenCon either way :)

I would once again like to throw my hat in the ring for consideration. I had volunteered last year and had a showing, albeit meager, in the voting for judge.

My personal theory is that if I can build on that showing each year, I may be a judge for the 2008 Ennies!

A solid background in literature (I've been reading for over 27 years!) and excellently grammar make me an ideal choice for Judge.

To be completely honest though. I love games, I love gaming. They are a part of my life and they always will be. You don't have to be Nostradamus to figure out that d20 plays a HUGE role in the future of gaming.

I would like to do my part to play a role in that future.

Thank you for your consideration and I am certain whoever is chosen the ENnies will once again be a grand adventure for us all to enjoy.

Well, I can't claim to be a d20 rules expert, nor do I have vast experience with any RPGs aside of D&D. However, I've been playing D&D since around 1982 or so, most of that time as the DM.

I like to think I'm a good reader, and that I can criticize with the best of 'em. I express myself in writing pretty well, and everyone keeps telling me how smart I am (though if I'm so dang smart, why won't anyone hire me? hah).

I do have, though, plenty of free time, and I read very quickly. I've been around ENWorld since before it was ENWorld, though you can see by my postcount that I'm not really a major-league post-maven. I'm just a fairly regular gamer, one who'd love a chance to serve as an ENnie judge.

Thanks for your consideration, and have a great day :)

If Psion becomes a judge, I'd like to be a EnWorld staff reviewer. (;

Anyway...
* RPGnet reviewer with over 20 reviews.
* OgreCave reviewer with over 10 reviews.
* Previous experience in online collaborative projects ("Best of 2002" games articles)
* Review turnover of one week. Opinion in 1-2 days.
* 20+ years of AD&D/D&D GM experience
* Regular on EnWorld and RPGnet message boards.
* Wide exposure to the gaming community through game convention events, game clubs, etc.
* Familiar with many different publishers through reviews and time spent in game stores.

I've played a good number of rpg's besides d20, so can bring in experience outside of d20. In my reviews, not only do I comment if a product is good for the general gaming audience, but which types of gamers would particularly appreciate (or should not purchase) the product.

BTW, I'd like to see a new category: Best PDF product that takes advantage of its format. I'm about to review yet another PDF that thinks it's a book. Time to spend another ink cartridge.

I'll give it a shot again this year.

I was in the running to be a judge last year, but was not selected (I got nine votes, though).

I have been playing D&D since 1980. I've also played many other games over the years, and I'm familiar with many others. During that time, I also have been a subscriber to Dragon magazine, and at times other gaming-related magazines, so I've always stayed up on the gaming industry, latest trends, new products, etc.

I've been a member of these boards for more than a year -- since the old incarnation. I come here mainly to keep informed about new products and new trends in the gaming industry, but I do occassionally offer advice or my opinion on various subjects.

I graduated from college with a bachelor's degree; my major was journalism with a minor in English literature. I have been working in the newspaper industry since 1983, first as a reporter, then starting in 1986 as an editor. I write, edit, and do layout on a daily basis, as my job. I also write reviews -- albums, plays, movies, books -- so I know how look at something with a critical eye, take it apart, discuss its good points and bad points, and make a recommendation on it.

I know what to look for in published material -- grammar, writing style, strong art, use of visuals, layout, presentation. I have been a DM or game ref for most of my time as a gamer. I write some of my own material, and I use some published materials. I know what makes a good adventure, or good sourcebook, and what doesn't. I don't make a lot of money, so I've learned to evaluate gaming material with a keen eye toward value, and what can easily be used by a player or ref, and what will require lots of work on the user's part.

The judging period falls during a time when my job load lessens, so I can devote the appropriate amount of time to evaluate the products.
