ENnies 2003 Judges!

I don't want to judge, but...

Hello all. I guess this is as good a place as any to post this :) Last year's Ennie's didn't quite go over without a hitch. We where getting the microphones and stuff into place even as the ceremony was about to get started. Everything went off acceptably well, but not as well as it could of...

Anyway, I'd like to volunteer to be both Stage manager and technical director. This is what the job involves in case anyone else is interested. Unlike judging, this is something that REQUIRES that you be at the con.

Technical Director
The technical director does the technical preparation for the show. This person either prepares all the props and equipment for the show or assigns lackeys to do it for him. In a typical theatre show you have designers for lighting, sound, set, costume and make-up -- We certainly don't need all that. At a minimum we need sound squared away and after sound designing 3 shows at the University of Kentucky I know how to handle this part on my own. Lightning is another possibility, but this is partially determined as to where we are going to throw this show in the conventions center.

Most convention centers have preset light arrangements. They can hang other sets if you wish, for a fee well beyond what we could pay (Peter might be able to get it done but I doubt it AND I doubt it would add enough to the ceremony to be worth the expense. If this was desired I do know how to do a lighting design skematic to give to the house manager (which is an employee of the Indy convention center).

The Technical director is also in charge of seeing to it that the props are ready to go. In our case, this is the completed awards statues. Finally the tech director works with convention personell to set up the stage area, podium, etc.

Stage Manager
The stage manager's job is during the show. The main part of this job is crew boss. This person calls the cues of the show - i.e. when the lights go up, when music is played and when it is turned off. Basically the stage manager's job is to make sure the show goes so smoothly that no one realizes that he's there.

In closing, while the judges deal with the who gets what award, I'd be dealing with making sure the show itself goes off without a hitch. Last year's show was fun, but I think I could help to give it a little pizzaz. Further, it would take some organizational work off of Russ' shoulder's, and with all the work he does for us that can only be a good thing.

BTW, I work well with others. :) If someone else would like the jobs I described, and if Russ decides they are indeed available, then by all means post an app. Tech jobs aren't all that glorious though - if you do them right, no one notices. Mess up and you never hear the end of it :P

I just wanted to say that I'm proud that a good selection of people have felt able to come forward and offer up their names. It's going to be an interesting slate, and it says a lot about the sense of community we have here on the EN World boards! :) Heck, if i weren't longterm ill, and thus sometimes suspect my judgement, I'd feel emboldened to put my own name forward.

You're a man after my own heart, Michael. I'll be at GenCon whether I'm elected a judge or not, so I'll be happy to help you out (I'd been planning to volunteer, myself, when the time came closer). Gotta put my theatre B.A. to use somehow. :)

Might as well throw my hat into the arena as well here.

Well, as many may know, I'm not the most prolific reviewer with Simon and Psion having a head start on me, but I'm slowly catching up to them.

Like a few others, I've had reviews all over the place. Shadis, The Gamer's Connection, D20 Weekly, Pyramid, RPG.net, OgreCave and others.

I've done some minor maintnance on this site for the A-E section prior to the new coding going in to allow publishers to add their own details.

I've worked with deadlines before on the Quicksilver area in RPG.net as well as for OgreCave.

I've read most of the d20 material currently on the market.

Involved with two D20 Fantasy based campaigns.

Heck, I've even been to EN World Day at Games Plus once. Next Saturday, it'll be twice.

Not as much a poster as some, but post frequent enough to be known by several.

Have no shame about calling a company out for what I consider poor art, bad timing or 'lame' reasons why a product did X when X is in bad taste. :D

Sounds cool. These are a few ideas I had.

#1. I know a couple of trophy shops in Lexington KY that I might be able to get a pretty good deal on for the trophy plaques. I also think that the design of said trophy or plaque would make for a great contest :)

#2. I'm plan to get out my jigsaw and make an ENWorld / Ennies sign to hang behind the stage area. Again, I'm open to suggestions, but this should include the official ENWorld logo in the design...

#3. I would like to set a preshow music set that runs about 45 minutes. Also some show music tags (pieces that run only 15 seconds to cover the time it takes for the receiver of the award to get from audience area to podium and back.

Anything else guys..
