ENnies Awards?

I was very pleased that Trail of Cthulhu won.

One thing that I like about the Ennies, is that there's always some excellent products that I wasn't aware of.

Amid the talk of Paizo acting like the 1992 Dream Team in their version of an ENnies Barcelona Olympics*, and WotC having a good show as well on Star Wars saga, "Changeling: The Lost" cleaned house.

By itself as a single product it kicked @ss and took names. Amazing book (and product line) and the ENnies is won were well deserved. God, they're getting so much of money on the nWoD line...

*which raises the question of who among the Paizo guys takes the role of Charles Barkley in my analogy.

Well, the news page details silver and gold winners, but aren't there honorable mentions for each category as well?

At the nomination stage, yeah. Not at the winning stage. Otherwise, by definition, the honourable mentions are the other nominees in each category!

Essentially I think that - hype aside - getting nominated is the important aspect of the ENnies. It seems (someone can correct me if I'm wrong) that the judges select a field of games they think deserving of an award to go forward to the popular vote, and also make some honourable mentions to products they are not nominating for an award, but want to recognise anyway.

The awards themselves obviously reflect the decision-making process of a large-ish electorate, most of whom will not have seen all of the products in any one category. So the ENnies do two things - they provide a list of products considered excellent by judges who have looked at an enormous quantity of product and made considered judgements, and then they show which of those products is most popular and which companies can market their products best!

I'm a Paizo fan, and it's amazing to see them do so well - but they'd done exceptionally well even before the voting by having so much nominated, and any company with a nomination is bound to be feeling very proud, and rightly so, regardless of the 'results'.

This is very true. A good look at the list of the nominees reveals that every product is sitting among good company. I certainly felt that we'd scored some significant victories just by having the judges select what they did for nomination.

Now, of course, I feel all the more elated that we did as well as we did in the public vote, both as a company and with the particular performance of my baby, but you know the saw "It's an honor just to be nominated"? You can tell how true it is just by looking at who was nominated in the first place.

We were in great company. It felt fantastic. Congratulations to all the other folks who got their names on the list, and certainly congratulations to the other winners as well! It was wonderful just to be sitting among you.

Let's not be forgetting White Wolf. ;)

I mentioned it in another thread, I was impressed with Changeling: The Lost when I read the Free RPG Day booklet a while back, and impressed it won. I really ought to go buy that product but I need to find people who want to play the game!

I felt Aces and Eights was the most innovative combat resolution system I had seen in a while, and was surprised it didn't do better.

Paizo I figured would kick butt, they have had a great run of products.

Next year might be a very interesting Ennies competition I suspect.

SammichCon Productions was robbed, ROBBED I TELL YOU!

But that's ok. I hear they have something amazing in the offing for next year.

;)
