Fabula Ultima Hardback & Bestiary Vol. 1 Kickstarter

Adjacent: (since I am guessing some folks following this thread are JRPG fans): as a western CRPG fan my entire life, i have never really played a JRPG. Of the modern ones that seem to get a lot of praise like Octopath Traveler, what JRPG would you recommend for a long time CRPG player? NOTE: I prefer turn based to RTwP
How modern do you need it to be? My favs are pretty old.

My recommendation would be:
Final Fantasy 6 (ATB)
Chrono Trigger (ATB)
Golden Sun & Golden Sun: the lost age (Turn based)
Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (Strategy)
Tales of Vesperia or Tales of Symphonia (Action RPG)

What does "ATB" stand for?

My fav old school jrpgs are Chrono Trigger, FF6 (FF3 in US), FF7, FF Tactics, FF Tactics Advanced 1 &2. Newer games are Persona 5, Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Triangle Strategy, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4.

Edit: Forgot Fire Emblem Three Houses. That was a great game.

Fabula Ultima has reached one million dollars. It is still €145K from its final stretch goal.

An updated version of Final Fantasy Tactics just released for PC on September 30th.

There are also a few acclaimed Indie Western RPGs that have come out recently that are heavily inspired by JRPGs you can find on Steam (and other platforms): Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes.

NOTE: I prefer turn based to RTwP
NOTE: I dislike RTwP too, and prefer turn-based.

Great suggestions. Metaphor: Refantazio is also a really good modern take on JRPGs.
