ENnies for miniatures?

Counter-intuitive or not, the rules for the awards, as handed down by GenCon, is that the awards have to be RPG-specific and CANNOT move into non-RPG territory... such as fiction, wargames, mini games, collectible mini games, collectible card / dice games, card games, dice games, etc.

I understand the reasons; it's just still counter-intuitive. We can't extol the virtues of product A simply because it was originally designed for a different niche. Even if product A were the best thing to happen to RPG since story-based experience points, 99% of the RPG community considered it a must-have, and it single-handedly changed the face of RPG gaming, it's disqualified from being recognized by an Ennie award, due solely to the fact it was originally intended for a different gaming niche. (Don't you just love hyperbole? :D )

Dramatics aside, it seems we ought to be able to recognize the contributions a product makes to the RPG arena regardless of its origins. That's what I don't get, but hey, some folks juggle geese.

You can't include everything in the awards. I personally sometimes use Lego minifigs in my game, and have on occasion used wooden building blocks or even Hot Wheels cars. Should they be included, just because someone uses them? I don't think the answer for that is yes, therefore the McFarlane Dragons and other toys, cool as they are (and I own a few), can't be eligible.

I still respectfully disagree with this becase no one would nominate the Legos, Hotwheels, or wood blocks but there is a slim chance the McFarlane Dragons would get a nomination and I feel that the voting would decide and that would be the justification to include them.

Well, it'd be nice to recieve a dispensation to judge a single "miniatures" category. It seems to me that judging a line of miniatures (or miniatures accessories) in terms of their usefulness in an RPG should be allowed. Their merits as independent games cannot be considered in the judging - it would have to be all about how useful they are in an RPG.

Since we've already expanded *well* beyond the D20 focus (something that I, personally, miss) I think some serious effort should be placed on at least being comprehensive. Minis may not be a part of all RPGs, but they're a part of a lot of them.
