You know, one thing occurs to me in regard to the PDF issue, and maybe it's just because I'm in graphic design... The likelyhood of a PDF product being used seems to increase once I've printed it out. It's easier to read, and comprehend. The cost of printing can put a dent in a persons printing/copying/ink budget, especially in larger documents...

So why not make it part of the rules that the PDF entry has to send a print copy of their work. This might avoid the 'cheapness of production flood' that someone mentioned, and if you post a standard format for PDF print-out submissions, ( i.e. b/w 2 sided with binder clips - color cover okay ) then you might solve other problems...

Just my two coppers, maybe I'm looney though, you can't take this Beanbag too seriously! ;)

I think last year the entrants with pdf products did have to send either a hardcopy have the product on disk. I know that all the pdf products I remember getting and judging came that way.

Not that it's relevant quite yet, but there are a couple of issues on the table which the judges will be tackling this year before they begin any judging:

1) Categories -- people have suggested a new PDF category.

2) 2nd/3rd place awards - several publishers have asked for these (Gold/Silver/Bronze...?)

3) That WotC issue again.

If you have an opinion on any of these issues, please take the time to weigh in and let the judges (whoever they end up being!) know in this thread.

1) While PDFs are interesting and there have been some great products I feel they should fall in with their printed peers or you are facing PDF awards for every category.

2) Maybe, this could help with number 3 but limit it to Best and Honorary (make it sound better than that) :)

3) WoTC, if you go againt them for market share, you should go against them for the spoils. They are publishers too.

Just a personal thought/opinion on this... Looking at the numbers thus far, it appears that it will likely be the same judges as last year. Thinking ahead to next year, wouldn't it be interesting if judges had to be rotated so that no judge could serve two years in a row? This way you get variability in the reviewing of the material and help eschew the enevitable claim of favortism that arises every time awards come up. If you have different people, then you represent a wider sample of gamers and also avoid ruts or bias.

Again, just thinking ahead to next year while we are selecting this year's judges. :)

Well we know that Eric is out. It really looks like Crothian, Henry, Darkness, or Joe Kushner could be in there this year.

Evidently the majority of the voters don't agree (so far). I have never been in favor of term limits. If enough people think the judges are showing favoritism I am sure they will simply not get elected again.

I've been thinking about a lot of the issues over the past year and just thought I'd weigh in here (don't ask for specific numbers from a lady, that's not polite)...

PDFs should have their own darned award and the ENnies are not the place to do it. Let RPGNow or SVGames or the digital publishers group get their act in gear and stage their own event. If we can't compete with print, then we must be doing something wrong.

I'd like to see a first runner up in each category. If WOTC is going to walk away with every award again, it'd be nice who came in second place. Don't worry about silver and bronze, but a runner up would be nice.

I want to play with the big boys, if WOTC wants in, then great.

But most of all, I want my trophy from last year's ENnies. We live in a small town. Us getting that trophy would be front page news here. And the kids really want to bring it to show and tell.

PDFs: Speaking as a voter, I'd prefer to see the PDFs with the others. I look at the ENnies for best product, not "best product written with a Macintosh" or "best product published on papyrus". If it's good enough to win, it's good enough to win.

WotC: I'm all for WotC playing. Remember, there will only be a few judges, and they will have all of those other publishers in their hands. If the other publisher made a better product, it doesn't matter whether or not the judge "knows of" them. See my comment on PDFs, above.

Same judges: Incumbent status seems difficult to overcome, and yet... we overcome it all the time. If a judge is doing a good job, I say we keep 'em. If they start to suck... vote for me!

I think PDFs and WotC products should be mixed in with all the rest. How are the awards valid if one of the major publishers isn't allowed to compete? It'd be like forfeiting a chance at first to see who comes in second.

Besides, I haven't really been impressed with WotC stuff lately.

I don't think anybody answered my questions, so I'm going to go ahead and post them again. How many judges will there be (beside pre-selected ones)? When does voting end? Is Simon Collins listed here? Thanks. :)
