Oops... the Drow have an Hat of disguise (looking as moon elf if I remember) and the Fey'ri use Alter self to appear as human.

But that wasn't the goal of the topic, it was more about the use of Entangle.

The PCs were upset about their decision to dismiss the entangle and withdraw when they have done enough damage, they didn't believe it, telling that they should have come to finish all of them because they have opened fire first.
Well... entangle is a good spell outdoors.

And your rogue & monk really suck at rolling reflex saves. ;)

The worst is that bad rolls have getting them in a lot of trouble since the beginning of this campaign... they have failed so many crucial die roll, that I now roll the majority of them.. fudging sometimes..

"Because they opened fire first"? This is supposed to be some kind of universal rule of warfare or something?

The elves wanted to drive the intruders off and discourage them from coming back. They did that. Tell the players to stop whining.

Wait- so your players wanted the TPK? Personally - I wouldn't explain the elves' reasoning out-of-game to them. Maybe I'd assure my players "Trust me - I'm not doing this to save you. What the elves are doing makes sense in game to the elves." I might also hint that if they really want to find out the in-game reason, they could try pursuing the elves and earning the TPK that they wanted so much ;)

Seriously - I think you played the encounter well. These elves aren't brutal killers - they're xenophobic and they'll do what they must to keep outsiders away from their forest, but they don't go out of their way to slaughter people. And on top of that - the campaign goes on!

Last evening, the party waits at the Forest border for a group of elves. The PCs wrongly think that the elves will talk...

Is it something wrong with this situation?

Well, the only thing that might be wrong is if you mislead the players to believe the elves would talk, then nailed them with an ambush... unless that was what you meant to do.

In other words, if you did this just because you were feeling mean, then it's wrong. If there's a plot reason - especially if the players missed clues that would tell them - it's fine.

In my opinion, at least.

In facts, they didn't have enough much info on the elves, that where I could have helped more, giving them some clues about their agressivity.

First, for a 1st level spell Entangle is just plain nasty in it's applicable environment.

Second, the party should have preped a possibly hostile force with Readied actions on the caster. Whenever I see some nature hugging freak that even has the remote possibility of being a Druid I immediately check around me for vegetation. Paranoid? No, paranoid is an irrational fear. ;)

Third, did the party get to roll surprise checks? There have been countless posts made about how parties shoot first and ask questions later. You were gifted with a party that didn't and you just trained them otherwise. Next time at least have their opponents shout out "You have broken the sanctity of this woodland!" and give them a chance. Then they can take care of their end by preping a bit better. Hidden sniper, etc. I see that the mage wasn't high enough to have Dispel Magic to counterspell, but that leads use to...

Forth, perhaps the party has now learned to get a Druid or stay out of the woods. The Druid could have preped a Entangle counterspell.
