Enterprise 1/21/05

Richards

Legend
Hey, I just realized, with the board outages over the weekend to switch over to the new server, we never started up an Enterprise discussion thread for last week's episode. So, what did everybody think?

I thought the bodyswapping was nicely done - the actors got a chance to get into a slightly different role (I noticed that on a couple of occasions the "senior" alien was in a "junior" crewmember's body and vice versa, so we had "T'Pol" ordering "Archer" around and stuff). The chess scene in the beginning was neat. And a really nice "Trekkie cookie" in the name of the race that was inhabiting the bodies!

My favorite line was from Hoshi: "Math is just another language."

It was an ok episode. Like VB it didn't really leave much of an impression on me at the end. The only parts I disliked was Hoshi's breaking out of containment (compltely lame), Hoshi's background (bad girl at the Academy? Riiight...), Archer's painful plea at the end (painful as in badly done and scripted) and the mention of the Cardassians (admitedly "off-screen" but come on - is the galaxy really that small in Trek lore?).

The inclusion of the Organians initialy made me frown, but after thinking about it a bit more it wasn't too bad an idea.

Overall the episode was watchable, just not too memorable.

Hoshi got skills upon skills, and everyone on board just found out the hard way.

Small to a race, who has been exploring other races for 10,000 years.

I like it...especially for the look on Pholx's face, when he realize the real deal on what was going on meeting the host jumping-into-bodies entities.

I liked the ep. It didn't rock my socks but it kept me watching just to see how it would all pan out. The foreshadowing of the Prime Directive is thicker than gravy at this point. My hope is that the series lives long enough to see Archer actually have to enforce it one or twice. That and I want the Romulan wars. Exploding spacecraft are cool.

And: I liked the Hoshi backstory. She has a wild streak. Neat. Learning a little more about 2nd tier characters is always fun.

I was wondering what happened to it myself.

I thought the bodyswapping was nicely done - the actors got a chance to get into a slightly different role (I noticed that on a couple of occasions the "senior" alien was in a "junior" crewmember's body and vice versa, so we had "T'Pol" ordering "Archer" around and stuff). Well, it gave the junior members of the crew something to do this episode. Otherwise, it was a fairly average episode, it didn't really stand out in any way, but then the producers do tend to save the big episodes for sweeps. Mid-January tends to produce forgettable episodes.

The chess scene was disappointing to me. They're still playing chess in two dimensions! Where's the 3d chess boards? :)

The Trekie cookie didn't really seem to fit. If they're Organians, and they're preparing for first contact 5000 years from now, how does "Errand of Mercy" fit into this?

And why was Hoshi able to open the doors to the decon chamber? Why are there even door controls in there in the first place? Seems like a fairly bad way to set things up in the first place. It's just another example of Trek plot requirements overriding any sort of internal logic to the show once again.

The sceptic one said 5000 years, IIRC. The other one thought it would be sooner, or at least that was my impression.

The Federation initiated first contact so whatever timetable the Organians were planning was spoiled.

As for the episode itself, I really liked it. It was obviously a character episode rather than a plot one and it lived up to that brilliantly. Overall this season of Enterprise has been far superior than last years'. I never liked the whole Xindi plot.

They have finally decided to approach a pre-quel in a way I think is most successful. Keep tying in with what we already know to be true. This season it's been Dr Sung and the augments. One predicts Data and the other sets up Khan. Also they did a three-parter on Vulcan delving into Surak, showing young T'Pau and more about the Andorians. This last one tells us more about the Organians.

I think if they keep this level of quality up and keep tying it in to canon, Enterprise should be good to go for several more seasons.
