[Enterprise] Kapla!!! (Spoilers)

I'm a little surprised Marc hasn't started a thread for this yet. I'll happily take over though. So what did everyone think?

The universal translators seem to be taking over quite a bit. I guess it could be acceptable for use with the Klingons. Between the Humans and the Vulcans there's should have been enough contact with the Klingons to get an understanding of their language.

It did bother me a little that the mood between Archer and the chief engineer (name?) was so light hearted while their crew mates were being crushed down in the gas giant. It just seemed like they were taking to much time to get the shuttle craft ready and negotiating with the Klingon. Meanwhile we're shown scenes of the other ship starting to fall apart. (shrug) Oh well.

Aside from those few things I liked the episode. Archer's learning to deal with the Klingons anyway. It was funny to see the Klingon captain squirm like that at the end. :) Did anyone else thing the female Klingon was cute or is it just me?

The episode bothered me becuase on one point in particular.

The Klingon ship was in trouble because of the poison right? Well how did they get poisoned?

Yep they got poisoned by attacking someone and stealing from them. Odds are they killed a few people in the process of the raid. Since the target of the raid was so weak their only defense was using a poison to take out the Klingons.

Yet at no point even when Archer finds out how they get poisoned does he think it is a bad idea to save all of the Klingons.

Best thing to do would have been to save the crew, imprison the Klingons and deliver them to their victims for proper punishment.

Instead we get more cutesy talk with the Klingons and more confusion over reality. Everything ever written has said that Photon Torpedoes were invented by Starfleet. Guess that one isnt true anymore either.

I don't know if I necessarily agree.

We are not part of the conflict the Klingons have with the race they raided. Have we even met that particular race??

Aiding a ship which is in distress is a way to "make friends" in a galaxy where you have very few. If the Klingons had raided a Romulan outpost, should we hog tie them and hand them over to the Romulans??

You are definitely right about "light heartedness" aboard the Enterprise. I was starting to get mightily ticked with the Captain and the Engineer. "Move it freaks! Your friends are going to DIE!"

Overall, I like the episode.

doh!

I forgot to post a thread about enterprise and A2Z beat me to it!

yup ... liked this episode too.

sure there's some hokey stuff, but nothing that bad at least.

I liked how Malcom was gaggin to see the weapons load out.

Malcolm and Yoshi seem to be the saving graces of the ship.

If it weren't for them, they would have died episodes ago. Thank Malcolm for the wonderful notion of overloading the phasers and all those torpedo tests. Yoshi, while she is somewhat of a liability on away-missions, has proved that her savant language skills are invaluable. Who else on Enterprise would know the Klingon on word for "Warp Manifold".

I've also never realized what a bod she has until the final scene in the spa/rejuvy chamber.

YIKES! T'Pel is going to have a run for her Vulcan money. :)

Except by helping the Klingons you have taken a side in the conflict. You become no more neutral then the USA was in 1940 selling everything it could to Britain.

Okay, about saving klingons...

You guys are all very quick to suppose that the klingons are the ones who should deserve to be turned over to the authorities. We don't know the nature of the conflict, and neither did Captain Archer. At least the Captian knows well enough not to jump to conclusions, and acts on general humanitarian concerns - akin to the Red Cross, he helps anyone in trouble that he comes across.

Has it occured to you that the klingons might have been in a justified military action (or as justified as such things get)? Has it occurred to you that the poisoning was obviously planned, and that such use of trickery to deliver chemical weapons isn't exactly following the usual terms of engagement? Don't we today frown on use of poison against the enemy?

We do not know enough about the event to pass judgement. Plain and simple.

And let's not blow the act out of proportion. They helped a single crew - something like nine individuals, if I recall T'Pol's sensor readings correctly. That is nowhere near comparable to "selling everyting you can" to one side in a war.

To quote the Klingon female:

"we were stronger so we raided and took what we wanted"

Now combine this with what is known of Klingons and it becomes pretty apparent that they are little better then powerful bandits who do whatever they can get away with.

So, basically what you saying is that the Enterprise should help no one, because they have no idea what conflicts they are involved in, or sides they have taken?

The Federation is still getting their "sea legs". They are the new kids on the block (not the "music" group!). Until the Federation establishes policies and territory borders, Archer can do whatever the hell he wants. Archer likes to "help people" - so he does. The people the Klingons raided are unknown to him. If Captain Archer had come across an outpost that had been raided, the good Captain would have rendered medical/technical aid to those people.

Don't go bashing Archer for making decisions based on his gut, cause that is all he has for rules and regs right now!

I actually didn't have a problem with Archer and Trip joking around a bit. To me, that wasn't about them not taking the danger seriously, that was about them finding a way to deal with the stress.

As far as the photorps, I'm not sure where it says the Federation invented them. But let's remember a few things.

One, if it's not in one of the series or movies, it's not canon anyway.

Two, it's entirely possible the Vulcans already have them, and had them before the Klingons. You never know.

Three, if the Klingons hadn't had them, we wouldn't have gotten that great scene of Malcolm almost drooling on the control panel. I thought it was funny. :)
