We are all familiar with this tool in the GM's arsenal: chaning the appearance and behaviour of a monster while retaining its stats.
I'm planning to do the same with a troll against a lowish level party. With its horrendous toughness and considerable damage output, it should make a mean challange for novice PCs, especially in a low magic world (Midnight, to be specific, where there just aren't any direct damage spells worth onsidering at low levels). They'll have to flee across its terrain at first, until they can gather the knowledge and resources to fight it. It's not just 'a' troll; it's a Grendelish, fabled monster that can overwhelm and maim them with ease.
But the 'wicked witch of rubber' look of D&D trolls doesn't really do it for me. I was kind of considering giving the beast a more Eddings look, kind of an ungodly ogre-bear hybrid, all fir and claws and frothing nastiness, but that's a little... bland. Does the unrivaled might of ENworld's creative brain have any other suggestions or angles on what this creature could look like?
Unrelatedly: I was looking for a name for spontaneous clerics in this world, and came up with 'the Called'. Could someone with better Latin than I help me translate that? The nearest I can come is Vocator, which is probably closer to 'the Caller'. I was never too hot on the grammar.
Cheers.
