Eoin Colfer to write sixth Hitchhiker's Book

No, I don't like this at all. Although I somewhat liked the few Artemis Fowl novels I've read, I don't believe that Hitchhiker's Guide series should be expanded by anyone but Adams himself. And since that's not possible, it should be left there. Well just my opinion. If this happens, I'll propably be reading the book anyways.

Agreed. Don't like this one bit. Much as I disliked Mostly Harmless and would have loved to have Adams come back and write a sequel, I'd rather not see anyone else do it.

The Amber "prequels" should stand as testament to the folly of allowing others to dabble in the original author's playground.

I will just chalk anything like this up to non-canon attempt at money making. To me it is no different than if someone said they were writing a sequel to Dante's Inferno or or Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. While the book could be good it will have nothing to do with the original in my mind as far as the artistic merits and integrity of the originals are concerned. The Hitchhikers books are not a shared world or a corporate creation that various authors can keep churning books out for.

Apparently, according to the article, the author feels the same way. It claims he won't be trying to write as Douglas Adams, but will be writing his own book, using the Adams characters and setting.

I don't think this was needed, in any way, shape, or form, but at least they're being straightforward about it.

The author says, in reaction to being chosen by the Adams Estate for this project, that it's like being offered the superpower of his choice. I haven't read any of his stuff, but that's a fine, geeky sentiment to have, and for that I have to approve.

I wonder if this will expand on the stuff in Salmon of Doubt, or if this will go off on its' own direction? The unfinished story in Salmon was supposed to be the direction Douglas Adams was planning to take for the next, and really really real final Hitchiker's book.

Wait a moment - I think I read Salmon of Doubt (of course, unfinished, but with several further material from and around Adams), and it was a Dirk Gently Book, not a Hitchhiker book.

As I understand it, Adams was either planning on reworking it, or combining the two series before he died.

As for And Another Thing..., I'm not really sure what to think. Colfer's a good author, but I do agree that it might be for best that the series just remain unfinished. Still, I'll almost certainly buy a copy when it's released.

Sure, and both Mostly Harmless and the five novels of the Merlin cycle stand as testament that even original author needs to know when to tell his publisher "no, that's done". Closure's not a bad thing. Always leave'em wanting more. Just ask George Lucas or the Wachowski Brothers.
