Epic Level take two

Hmmm. I was hoping that the Epic Level book would be , well, serious. Kinda like how the old basic D&D went up to level 36, then immortality.

But from looking at that post of the character sheet, it seems like it's not very serious. Kinda like the last Bloodstone (?) modules, H4...

?? How was it not "serious"?

I think they meant that it looks way out there in power. Few GMs I know would even give that sheet a second glance, or of they did, it would be to wince and throttle the player.

If the player and GM want to play that sort of game, however, then there's no problem. As long as everyone is having fun.

At any rate, please keep the discourse civil. I'm enjoying this discussion, and I don't want the thread smashed like the old one.

I have a feeling that, with the nature of epic-level play, a single NPC will likely constitute an entire adventure, not just a single encounter. So, yes, one NPC will be much more work, but the yield will likewise be greater.

The thing I'm wondering about is what to do with Harm? I mean, if it is left having no fortitude save, then it becomes even MORE horrific in epic level play. There's a considerable difference in dropping someone with 90 hp to 1d4 hp as compared to dropping someone with 1,000 hp to 1d4.

Also, it's interesting that it looks like it'll get to the point where damage magics are secondary to instant kill spells. I noticed a large prevalance of 'Annihilation' on there.

Heehee. Maybe it will force them to finally admit that Harm is a horrible spell that breaks the system. Eat crow, WOTC! :)

Well, I don't think you should read too much into the character that was posted. For example, I've heard Upper_Krust describe his quasi-epic character, and I don't remember any instant-death abilities. Remember, the guy said that the Lady of the Mountain used some tidbits from the Epic Level Handbook.

True, but consider. Which is easier? Chewing through 800+ hp, or tossing one killer spell?

Oh well, saves me $40
That character sheet is not representative of the Epic-Level Handbook; the creator of the character hasn't completely read the ELH and also used a lot of house rules from his own campaign. Plus, ELH works best for (IIRC) levels 21-40; level 71 characters would be extreme exceptions in my most campaigns - if they existed at all.

Well, which is more effective? Throwing a DC 45 Destruction at someone with a Fortitude save of +67, or attacking 4 times for an average of 100 points of damage each swing, then doing it again the next round? ;) For what it's worth, I can create a 12th level character that can make one attack per day that will do >100 points of damage guaranteed, using only the PHB and Sword and Fist, so I don't think the latter part of my example is too far-fetched.

I await judgement on the rules, but as of now I trust that there will be reasonable checks and balances to keep the game enjoyable.

Hmm....true....better fall back on energy drain and negative levels then. Time to break out the use-activated energy drain swords, and suck 4 levels away per hit.

Also, I suspect that, with all the options, the checks and balances are going to consist of the GM saying 'No!' alot. Not that I have a problem with that, mind you, being a GURPS GM myself.

I am sure that if someone was to run a game where the intent was to create and play ultra-high-powered PCs, that character wouldn't be out of place. When you come down to it, a character sheet is just numbers on a page. What gives those numbers meaning is the context. If the context suits the character concept, then everything's fine.

Of course.
