epic monsters

The Tarrasque hasn't been the ultimate monster every since at least 2e came along. If you look hard enough there was probably something in 1e that was more powerful than the Tarrasque. What difference does it make now in D&D that there's something more powerful than a Tarrasque, there were tons of things more powerful than it before, even in the same book it shows up in as well. And finally who said a Tarrasque has to be a unique creature anymore?

Somewhere i remember reading (or perhaps I dreamed it up) of a planet/plane where Tarrasques run in heards like the buffalo, while being hunted by an even mightier predator. Anyone know where this is mentioned; a Planescape supplement perhaps?

Look at the other way, what if the Tarrasque was the most powerful monster in fact when designing the Epic Level system they had this "Tarrasque Cap" That would have been a serious ceiling on everything, the whole Epic Level handbook would have to be given up, because there was so little wiggle-room.

High Level Power Scaling

Well, I think I'm going toss out a complete non sequitur here but since Hong's already posted in this threat I suppose I'm okay...

Given the way D&D gauges challenge ratings I assume the designers intended (or recognized) that a character should be able to have a roughly 50% chance of winning against 2 characters of 2 levels below him. How do others feel about this? How many 20th level characters should it take to make an even fight with a 30th level character (if you had your ‘druthers that is)?

Personally I’d like to see the differences at higher levels stretch out a bit; perhaps one 12th level character is a match for 2 Nines, but two 25’s might be a match for one 30 (or perhaps even two 23’s or 24’s). This would make me feel a bit better about epic levels instead of my current concern that a 40th level character simply blows 30th level characters off the scale (for instance, much more so than a 20th level character as compared to a 15th level character).

Spelljammer. One of the miscealleous worlds. It was a thread that never went anywhere, but they weren't hunted by anything else.

This one is so easily solved, it's laughable.

Give the Tarrasque epic levels in some PC class. DUH.

It doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense - remember the 3E byline on monsters with character levels and templates:

"Just because you can do it, you should!"

Throw in some templates too, for good measure - then load him up on epic level feats, and he'll be as silly as a flumph in mud.

If that isn't enough, clone 50 of him, strap babies to them, and lock the PCs into a 10 by 10 foot room with them. Remember: 3E is all about options - no stinky multiclassing restrictions for Messieur Tarrasque, no sirree! No stinky old common sense either, if you don't want it. Ah, brave new edition...

the terrasque never has been, and never was meant to be the most powerful foe in D&D. granted, it's one of the most powerful things in the monster books, but even then there were things that could beat it. i'm sure a resourceful great wyrm dragon could beat it. and what about the demon/devil/slaad lords, as well as tiamat and bahamut? all of those guys could outthink the sluggishly slow terrasque in a second.

IMC, the Tarrasque has a big role to play as an Epic-Level challenge. Y'see, he's got a mad king begging for his resurrection and a world to rampage.

Basically, I see the Tarrasque as The Godzilla Factor. He can level any pansy commoners that try to hit him with tanks and shotguns and stuff. He can stomp buildings and kill even big monsters, no prob.

But who do you call when Godzilla gets out of hand? Well, that's when you get Mothra (e.g.: epic-level PC's) to kick some almighty booty.

And, yeah, I'm not against givin' ol' Terry some levels and stuff, either. Templates are iffy....vampire Terrasque? Eep....
