Epic Seed Question

Marshall

First Post
So my, hypothetical, 21st level WIZ just picked up the Epic Spellcasting feat.

I dont have the cash(yikes, way to expensive)
or the XP(these numbers are just ludicrous)
to research any new "spells"

So can I just prepare the epic seeds in my (2)epic spell slots?

I'm leaning towards "Yes", but is there a definitive rule on it?

Before you can prepare the spell, you'll still have to research it... even if it is only a seed. It makes the calculations really easy, though, because you don't have actually figure out any of the DC modifiers.

A seed is not a spell. If you have not spent the gold, XP, and time to actually research an epic spell, those epic slots are pretty much useless.

Looks like a pretty good motivation to go adventuring.

(In some murky dungeon) Must....further....arcane...research....
So gimme yer gold, you fiend!

Ahh, but you already 'know' all the epic seeds once you take "EpicSpell". Why should I have to research spells I already know?

Actually you don't "know" the seeds. A spell seed is just a metagaming construct, like a class level or a hit die; it's used in the description of the rules, but it doesn't actually exist in the game world.

Yep.

Spell Seeds have gotten alot of smacking around, but you can still make some decent, low cost Epic spells.

In the last WotC adventure, the one that pushes you to Epic, they gave any 21st level caster one 10th level spell slot, to tide them over till Epic. Since Epic spells are considered 10th level for alot of things, you could just treat them as 10th level slots for MM enhanced spells.

Personally, I'm going to wait on Epic spells. Automatic Quicken is more useful at 21st-25th levels, IMHO.

Of course, you cant get Auto-Quick until 27th level, so its a moot point.

And 'cheap' is not a word to describe epic spells

The 'cheapest' epic seed is dc14

14x9000gp = 126,000gp
/50k = 3days
/25 = 5040xp

So it costs 126kgp, 5000+xp and takes 3 days to research Mage Armor

You know the more I look at it, the more I agree Epic Spellcasting is just stupid

In most cases, it doesn't really make sense to research an unadjusted spell seed. Remember that a DC 14 epic spell actually is the equivalent of a 1st level spell (page 91, sidebar). You'll do much better by combining seeds or options of seeds.
