equal or lower?!

sorry if its been up before, but it seems that wotc is making the same mess that they did with the 3e warlock.

basically its the ability to exchange a power for one of equal or lesser level.

problem is that if you replace it by a lesser level power, you cant go back up again at a later time. why? because its only equal or lesser, not greater. and its relative to the power being replaced...

page 28 PHB, retraining, power.

hmm, now that i look at it, they have covered their behinds in the character advancement table. as you hit specific points, you can replace 1 power from a specific category with a higher level one...

bah, somehow i still feel cheated...

Wait, you feel cheated of your right to complain about a design flaw because you later discovered that, in fact, the design is not flawed?

This brings hating to new levels! :)

thing is, im not sure if that bit in the advancement table is in there to cover that sinkhole of a power retraining rule, or if its just a "happy coincidence" that they "kinda" allow a bailout of a potentially bad decision done early on.

also, when i think about it, its probably better to just hang on to whatever power you have then retrain it as you get to replace it anyways at a later time.

i dont know, it seems so messy. why have the replacement stuff in the advancement table in the first place? why not just lump it all into the retraining rule and be done with it?

thing is that you only have a limited number of encounter and daily power replacements available, while you can retrain at any time you gain a level.

looking at the table you get to replace a encounter attack power every 4 levels, starting with level 13. and a daily attack power every 4-5 levels starting with level 15.

interestingly this corresponds with when you get access to powers of that type.

ok, so its not as broken as i first thought (i had the 3ed warlock mess clear in my head when i first read that bit about retraining). but it makes me wonder how balanced those level 13 and later powers really is, that is if someone where to pick up multiples of the same level...

You obviously totally misunderstand the intent of the developers. When you level up you keep gaining new powers. They couldnt have it, or they didnt want it so that you just kept acumulating more and more powers. Therefor, at about mid paragon (13th) when you get a new power, instead of just adding it to a list of powers you already have, you must give up an older power. It has nothing what so ever to do with retrining.
