Escalthemas, The Ascendant Shadow

As for a realm, I think it would fit him, if he had a citadel on the transitive plane of shadow, as it is a home for many evil creatures and few good.

For personality I think he should actively oppose evil, but that does not mean physically, but rather by going to the infernal planes, trying to convert evil creatures, save lost souls, and generally making life miserable for the evil lords. He need not be a pacifist in any way, but should try to convert evil creatures by action and words, rather than with violence. Sort of like a missionary. (Meaning of course, cleric levels.)

AS for one of his followers, I suggest taking a moderatly powerful devil or demon (such as a Cornugon or a Vrock) and changing it to a good creature (changing it's innate abilities, to reflect it's change, such as for example changing Poison to Neutralise Poison and Animate Dead to Raise Dead) and giving it a couple of class levels of perhaps cleric (with the Good and Healing domains).

This screams out for patron of Shadowdancers.

His realm should include quite a few shadows of the same alignment as him, helping to battle the reast of the darkness.

I forgot the plane of shadow! Thats a brilliant idea :) so we can definitely use that. The powerful risen fiend as a follower would be nice as well, especially if they had their powers inverted towards good...

Wippit, I really envisioned him as a hyper powerful shadowdancer so having him as their patron would be perfect :)

Now on whether he should take a role as a missionary, I definitely think that should be part of his mandate (I think it should be built upon as you were suggesting Krish :)). However I wanted to keep some form of the 'assassin' or shadowdancer about him, someone that is actually a threat as a personal stalker of the dark lords rather than just a thorn in their side.

One way that I think this could be done is to have him act a in a fickle way (he is chaotic :p). Perhaps because of his pact with the forces of shadow he has a slightly fluctuating personality (his chaotic nature), though he is always a good being the darkness might sometimes grow in him and make him angry or more agressive. Rather than long running plots he could instead give himself 'missions' according to whether his darker nature is in ascendency, if it is subdued he goes on a missionary mission whilst if it is waxing he goes on a more aggressive task. He then starts to become a bit more of a tragic character and his followers could play the role of counscillors or supporters to him. Every now and again he could enter sunlight which weakens him and makes him vulnerable but also purges his soul of darkness, by this he stops himself from falling fully into darkness.

What do you think? Is that to much of a cliche of the tortured anti-hero? Is something about the original character sacrificed by giving him these new traits? If so I definitely wouldn't mind something else it's just I can't think of anything else...:D

Antiheroes are always popular, mainly because on can do so many different versions of them (Such as Elric, Batman, Spawn, Preacher, and Wolverine, to name a few). But I would suggest that you not give him levels of assassin as one of the prereq's for that class is taking the life of an innocent. Shadowdancer should be O.K. though, and shadowdancers do make excelent assassins. But other than that, I like your ideas. :D

I agree completely on not giving him actaul assassin levels (shadowdancer is fine) I was using the term in the more generic sense :). (Just like I could describe a person as a fighter meaing someone that fights ratehr than the class :)) Sorry for the confusion, I just meant giving him some assassin-like qualities.

I understand :D Hmm... When I said missionary, I'm talking sorta the old west kinda missionary man, with fire in his eyes and a gun at his side... :D

In other words, a traveling cleric that either converts you or kills you trying to... :D

Oh I saw him as more accepting, he doesn't want to scare them into believing he can just see when there is some goodness there and then acts as a counciller or guide towards the light.

But if we were giving him different personalities then his actions could have a full scale between assassin and quiet preacher, in between might be a 'fire and brimstone' preacher as you described or a political revolutionary that tried to stir dissent in the ranks of the evil armies...
