Hero
Ok, it's not a real book, but it bugs me that classic, er, classes, haven't been introduced into the Essentials Line. So, how would one expect, say, the Essentials Monk or Bard to be like?
Examples of my ideas (and I welcome any constructive criticism vis a vis game balance, etc.)
The Monk (Karate Champ, or Pugilist, or Kung Fu Master, whatever)
Role: Defender
Fights Unarmed or with a staff; uses WIS vs. AC or Reflex
Can activate a defender aura like a regular fighter, but the "Battle Guardian" of the fighter becomes "Monk Guardian", which allows the monk, as an opportunity attack, to immobilize any enemy that shifts or attacks an ally while in the monk's defender aura.
Monk stances: Dazing strike stance; at-will; WIS vs. AC; target: one creature; Hit: 1d6 + STR mod damage; Effect: target is dazed until the beginning of your next turn. Dazing strike may only be used once per round. (perhaps simply immobilized or slowed would be a better condition?)
Spin Kick stance: at-will; WIS vs. Reflex; Target: one creature; Hit: 1d6 + STR mod damage, and the target is pushed (maybe slid?) one square. As a free action, the monk can shift one square to a space adjacent to the target.
Bard (Minstrel, Loremaster, etc.)
Role: Controller
Implement focus: musical instruments (+1 to spell attacks when using a harp, flute, lute, etc.)
I'm not sure whether it would be better to have the bard treat his songs like spells (he casts a new one each round) with a sustain minor, or to treat them more like stances, in which the song continues until the bard takes a free action to stop singing or changes songs.
Melancholy Air: At-will Clost Burst 3; CHA vs. Will; Target: each enemy in burst; hit: CHA mod damage and enemies recieve a -1 penalty to attacks (or perhaps to all defenses?)
Discordant Tune: At-will burst 3; CHA vs. Fortitude; Target: each enemy in burst: targets take 1d6 + CHA mod damage
Sorceror
Role: Striker
Similar to Wizard, but uses CHA or possibly CON to cast instead of INT.
Warlord
Role: Leader
An essentialized version of the PHB class; I haven't given this one much thought.
I also would like to see the Gnome and Aasimar races
And RITUALS!!
Essentialized rituals could be the old 2e and 3e "buff" spells that can be prepared in such a way that they can be cast quickly at the start of or during a battle.
Something I forgot earlier was the addition of a new implement: the magic wizard's hat; whether the traditional "dunce's cap" embroidered with a moon-and-stars pattern (wide brim optional) or a simple skull cap, the magic user can use his magic hat to focus his energies, enhance his spells, and just add that air of mystique that comes with proper headwear.
That's all for now....
