Event Registration

So I went and registered this morning, on Sunday. I was able to get into quite a few of the things I wanted, with no problem. Many of them were the last or next to last seat in a game, but I'm in. I also signed up for a few fun things (Lego battles, card games, seminars) that I really wasn't worried about getting into but will cool to play in regardless.

If anyone wants to run through the True Dungeon with me, I'm signed up for event RPG00329 at 18:24 (6:24pm) on Thursday 8/19/04. I've signed a friend up as well, but there are still 5 spots available as I write this, and I'd like to have others that I know go through it with me as well. So sign up and let me know if you'll watch my back! ;)

The other events I'm signed up for are: GURPS 4e Cliffhangers, Robbing Hood (Lego Battles), Call of Cthulhu Dark Ages, Brick Quest (Lego miniatures adventure), You Too Can Cthulhu (intro CoC game), Apples to Apples Tournament, and Feng Shui (intro game). I've got a few seminars as well, time to wander the dealers room, and time for pickup games. I've probably over booked myself, but thats ok, I'll drop a few things I'm sure.

Bah... you're one of those people with a last name that starts with "A" aren't you?

Random number assigned when you buy your badge. Then they authorize, say, 500 people at a time, in 2-day blocks. Or something like that.

Bargh! Last night I made up a 2 page Excel Spreadsheat of events to sign up for, then i choose back up events in case the ones I want are full.

But 3:40?!!! I still can't get on!

Wow. Society really is speeding up. It wouldn't have occurred to me to get frustrated, much less complain, until i couldn't get in for a couple of days, at least. I mean, given the registration period is, what, 6weeks? What's a few days either way?

I'm hoping to actually make it to this year's ENWorld gathering...probably after the ENnies, again?

For people not making it into the games they wanted...pick up games are the lifeblood of the convention. Heck, I ran 4 games last year in official capacity and they were a disaster compared to the pick-up games.

I'm cooking up a d20 Future adventure to run as a pick-up game in case anyone decides they need me to run anything.

Hey, does one have to register for seminars (seeing they're $0.00), or can you just show up?

Officially, you have to register. For seminars, the registration limit is usually determined by fire-code room capacity limits, more than anything else. In practice, very few seminar organizers check for tickets, much less collect them. But, at least once that i know of, a seminar went through and threw everybody out who hadn't registered, because the room was over-full.

Also, if you like a seminar, that person/group is more likely to run more seminars if their registration numbers are high. Probably get slightly-more-favorable treatment in terms of scheduling spaces, too, if their numbers are higher. Finally, if they have to move events around for some reason, they'll probably use the registered numbers for picking a new space, so it might end up in a place that's simply too small if a whole lot of people want to just show up without registering.

So, what I want to know about Gencon. Do you really see the people out there in chainmail bikinis who really should not be in them?? Or is that a rumor.

Yep. And far too few of the people who "should" be in them, are. :D

God loves everyone. It's the son-of-a-bugbear that bought GenCon that is providing this high level of service. :\

Hey, registration last year wasn't anywhere near as bad as Andon/WotC's first (or was that second?) year of GenCon, and they (Adkison, et al) at least apologized. Overall, Adkison's management is a huge improvement over when WotC, then Andon, then WotC, ran things.

That's bad. ;)

at this point.. I'd say screw it... if I hadn't already spent the stupid 60 bucks...

Well... atleast their's still 4 days of "playing at the wizards booth to get free books"

Huh? If you're really not gonna have fun, getting out now with $60 spent makes a lot more sense than lumping travel costs, hotel, etc., on top of it. Conversely, if you know you're gonna have fun, despite the registration delays, why're you complaining?

Anyway, i've registered as late as the day i got there (saturday, no less), and not had any trouble finding fun, interesting, open games. So perhaps you just need to broaden your search a bit--i just can't believe you can't find a game to play. Especially if you're a fan of D20 System.

I don't know who is in charge of making name tags, but I made one I thought could work. It has the ENWorld Logo, my avatar, my name here, and my actual name. Anyway, see if you like it.
Hey Gertie--there was nothing attached to this message. Can you either edit it, or repost so we can see the results of your work?
