D&D General Ever hear someone talking about D&D out in the wild?

#1 couple in anime
I went to a building next to the place I work and 2 guys around my age (45-55 range) where talking about D&D. One guy was telling the other about it and how he plays with his family. He also mentioned Critical Roles Candelabra Obscura (or whatever its called). He then started to explain his character.

Before that I was at a coffee shop and a Gen Z was telling another Z about 5E and explaining it and her character.

I can probably count on one hand how many times I've heard D&D and/or other RPGs discussed in the wild away from a game shop area.

I invited the guys to my Sunday OSE game after chatting with them for a bit, but they didn't seem interested. Again, reminded that while a lot more people are interested in D&D (and RPGs) and even express interest in playing (I've always wanted to try it!) but can't find the time or the will to actually do it.

But yea, cool to see some people talking about D&D randomly.

I wear nerd shirts quite often and it's really quite amazing how many people are willing to approach a stranger for half an excuse to talk about geek stuff after spending all week surrounded by non-geeks who would look at them funny.

I also once watch a Pathfinder 1, Pathfinder 2, 5e debate spill over from one table in a BJ's to another unaffiliated table in real time.

But I live in what is apparently the 6th geekiest city in America, so milage may vary.

Yea. I was at a grocery store and someone was talking about it and then noticed my shirt and asked if I played.

A group at the gym between sets of deadlifts talked about their game on several occasions.

There have been others. Lots. A couple at a bar. A mall. The DMV. And when I used to work in an office place co-workers.

A number of times actually. Groceries stores and bookstores are the two most common. I even met a guy at the local AT&T store who I overheard and chatting with, but he was really into PF2 and 4E, didn't like 5E at all.

I overhear the kids at college talking about playing on a few occasions. There is a gaming club on campus but I think mostly Magic. I did see a 4-week sessions on teaching how to play D&D.

The idea that people talking about D&D in meat space would be out of the ordinary is alien to me. Of the people I interact with on a regular basis - friends, family, coworkers, etc. I think a plurality probably play D&D, though I haven’t bothered to actually count. If it’s not more than half, it’s at least close. I’m still clinging to the label of “early” (as opposed to “mid”) 30s, if that makes a difference.

My son was once invited to join a Pathfinder game by a Target checkout cashier because he happened to be wearing a Doctor Who hoodie. (The cashier assumed, quite rightly in this case, that a Doctor Who fan might also by up for RPGs.)

Sort of. It once randomly came up as a topic at a work night out, with a couple of colleagues expressing some interest. That very quickly turned into a debate over who in the office was most likely to be interested, which was how I became involved. :)

That then turned into the game group that has just recently folded.

Enough that I don't reallly want to start listing all the times (partly because I can't remember all of the times, and partly because it would be a long list for me).

I hear about it quite regularly in the wild. The last time was when I was out this past week trying to see if I could find the new Xbox that was just released and the person helping me mentioned D&D in their everyday conversation (though granted, it evolved from them talking all about BG3 and how they loved it).
