Ever play a single race campaign?

I've never played in a single race campaign, but think I would enjoy one, especially all dwarves.

When Olgar Shiverstone's campaign went on hiatus (it is back, but we only manage to play about ever 6 weeks) one player pitched an all dwarf game, and I was strongly behind it, but the group decided to go another way (which did not last, but that is okay too because a large portion of the group was able to join diaglo's OD&D game). I still hold out hope we will get to his game eventually, but he currently devotes more time as a player (including keeping the storyhour going) than many DMs spend on their own campaigns.

I'm hoping to try something a little different by running a single-race campaign. For example, everyone would play a dwarf and be immersed in dwarven culture. The campaign would start in the city of the race, be concerned with racial issues and the players, some of whom are less knowledgeable about the game than they should be (I think) would get an opportunity to delve deeply into a classic fantasy race.

If you've done this before, what pitfalls can you steer me away from? Do the players get bored or did you find resistance? Do they end up developing unique characters or does it become a goofy snow-white-like story? Did you, as DM, find it tiresome after a while?

Let me know your thoughts....

We're playing an all-dwarf campaign in the FR universe. We were told that all of us were going to be dwarves. Nothing else. One guy did back out as he didn't care to play one. And we're not bored at all. The DM is doing published adventures as she's not experienced enough to "wing it" as she doesn't have that DM capability to think of stuff on the fly when we decide to go on a tangent. Or probably the experience either..... Granted there's alot of "Scottish Dwarves" as all have the Scottish brogue.....

I'll be starting a campaign where you can only play human, elan, feytouched or planetouched.

I've been wanting to get away from the "Lord of the Rings setting for a long while.

Twice - once on purpose.

First time everybody rolled up elfs, all without consulting the others. Some odd tactics showed up in that game like the indescriminate use of sleep spells dropped into combat, elfs are immune, so why not?

Second time was deliberate, an all dwarf Scarred Lands mini campaign.

And a half time, in a mixed race Iron Kingdoms game I had the PCs take over the role of Ogruns in a mission. But that was temporary to give the players some contol over something that was occuring away from the main group.

The Auld Grump, Dr. Pepper wearing off... eyelids growing heavy.... Gzzzzzzzz....

I ran an all orcs campaign once and it was really funny. I still have ideas for a new all orcs campaign which I will begin in near future.
In Cyberpunk 2020 I ran an all cops campaign which was also really funny and long lasting.

In my head are ideas for an all drow from one house campaign.

Yeah, there's an orcish society on one continent imc that's pretty 'civilized', and I once tried to run an orcish campaign. But most of the pcs made non-orcs- there was a tabaxi, a pair of halflings disguised as gnomes, etc. So I don't count that one.

We have an all jedi game in SWd20... All human 1 twi-lek.

Currently playing in a all human game. Other races exist, but everyone decided to play a human.

I played in an (almost) all elf game... 1 stupid human, all elves. Course, it was 2e...

I personally like diversity though...

Yes, and fairly often - all by accident. My players like humans, and pretty much play them exclusively (even in previous editions).

We just started an all-dwarf campaign today...I think it'll work out pretty well. I don't see why not...

Well, when the one dwarf on guard duty deserts his post, leaving his companions sleeping with no spells prepared and no one watching over them, well, that might lead to some problems. :p

When a DM offered to run a 3e game of Against the Giants, almost all of the players created dwarves, with one playing a gnomish bard. Although it seemed to be (and it probably was) extreme munchkiny cheesyness, I tried to persuade the DM to take this opportunity to adapt the adventure as a dwarven-themed campaign, but he didn't buy it. We were working for a human duke still. But we still had fun. We had distinctive personalities and roles, dwarven-flavored as they were. Overall very enjoyable.

I have been looking for an opportunity to play in a strongly themed campaign for a long while. Whether it's all one race, or one class, or completly urban or rural based.
