Ever run a D&D campaign as a D&D game?

i've had a long-planned storyline that involved the players finding a trio of great magical tomes (the d&d core books) and using them to understand and influence the world beyond anyones abilities. over the course of the campaign, they would use the knowledge from the books to alter the world more to their liking and at it's end be part of a new pantheon of gods to be raised to replace the old batch.

I wrote a short story way, way back in middle school about a group of adventures each of whom wore a little bracelet set with several little crystals (conveniently shaped like the platonic solids, plus weird decahedrons) that spun around every now and then to show a number on their faces. Whenever a 1 came up, the characters learned to panic, because that usually meant something horrible was about to happen.

I've also considered doing a d20Modern or CoC game losely based on the infamous Chick tract.
