The game I'm currently running has 3 fighters and a Barbarian, and that's it. The first sitting was a blast, but when they reached 2nd level, one of the fighters went a level as Cleric, something about needing healing.

Depends. There could be a lot of infighting, if they all worship different gods.

I considered that, but either:

A) They are all of the same Deity or...

B) They worship different Deities but the DM makes sure that they are sympathetic ones, or there is an in-game reason for them to associate.

Like, there is a powerful evil god that wreaks major havoc, and it is too big for one clergy to face it, so they all appoint one of their clerics to face this threat. Once the threat is dealt with (after many, many game sessions), they have become fast friends and stick together.

Hey, that could be fun !

A friend told me about a game he was involved in once.

The DM wanted to run something gritty. "Roll up a band of mercenaries," he told the players.

Twenty minutes later, they handed in their completed character sheets... every single one a Bard.

"We're a band," they explained. "The Mercenaries."

Hilarious!! :D

I played in a two-shot game once, in order to help introduce someone to how 3E works, where we were all barbarians. A human barbarian, a dwarf barbarian, my wife an elf barbarian and me a halfling barbarian. Because we were all roleplaying just how barbarian we were, the DM just about flipped his lid! For a crappy module run by a mediocre DM, we had an absolute blast!

Not myself, but a friend of mine once was in a group of wizards (well magic-users, as it was AD&D 2nd Edition), each with a different specialization. I heard they had to run a lot during the first levels... :D

The all-bard party is a great idea. Huge potential for storylines, particularly in a urban setting.

Mechanism wise it's not even so bad. All sorts of kinds of spell casting possible from the get-go including respectable healing. Once you add multiclassing a touch... mmm

And with some creativity it could even be gritty like the GM wanted. What if the band was knee-deep in mob-style society? Or even just go for "wrong place at wrong time" scenario and have the band "The Mercenaries" caught in the front lines as a war breaks out. It could be a classic example of being caught in a situation you are not well suited for...

hmmm
