Everything got serious

First Post
I was playing a game of DnD with my friends. The adventure was going great, but the players were getting bored, so I decided to throw something humerous into the adventure.
As the ranger in our group reaches into to the water to save the drowning noble, a dire rat bites him. The party kills the rat and they go to the nobels home, but that nite the ranger gets sick. Mutiple knowledge checks and bardic knowledge checks later they find the information for the disease. In 1 month the ranger will turn into a moose from the disease I call Moosey DOOM!! :D This was supposed to be funny.

All the players freak. The rangers player actually got kinda pale. The rest of the party injstantly want to be off to find the cure, even though we had to end the session in 10 minets. So now are next session is going to be all about finding the cure. This was only supposed to be a joke but the players took it very seriously.

Has anything like this ever happend to you?

Are they having fun- serious or not? That is mainly what matters. Make the cure somehow relate to your adventure to get them back on track quickly. It could be worse- much worse.

Moosey Doom.... too much.

You're the DM. You can't be killed by conventional weaponry.

Common misconception. The title of dungeon master serves you no protection when the players begin to viciously beat you.

Yeah, but I thought the rangers player was going to kill me after he got over the shock of what happened.

As a general rule, changing a player's character against their will won't make them happy. It falls into the same category as GMs who do stuff like 'You say..' and 'You do..' (i.e., that is, playing a character for the player). If you give them a real shot at finding a cure, I suppose that's cool, but changing a PC into something that they don't want be changed into purely for your own amusement can (and usually does) go horribly, horribly, wrong. Just giving you a heads up.
