Evil Deities: Who needs em?

Cal,

Yeah well that's because I've yet to see ANY other panethon join together to fight anything except the occasional "outter planer threat". The Gods of the Scarred Lands live on faith and power. And when that's threatened, buddy you'd better hope you don't fight. Cause while Asmodues might have the goods and the power, the SL gods got the entire material and Outer Planes to draw on their resources. Assy will be seriously outgunned. Sorry.

Yeah and name me any time they actually went to war against one and kicked the crap out of them?

Bane, did in himself

Lolth, just got banished.

Believe me the number of gods doesn't matter. It's the amount of committment you can have in a single panethon. Fact of the matter is, the Eight HAVE that committment. They go to war and keep warring until they feel the matter is settled.

Well, the general concept being that a great, unassailable evil makes the good that fights against it and remains pure all the more sacred.....

Yeah, I'm with the Psion and others who feel that they're not "mutually exclusive labels nor are they identical."

In my homebrew, the home region has a religion with one god and several saints in a vaguely Judaeo-Christian tradition. The main evil religous opposition here is diabolic cults. Asmodeus is the most prominent but other devils and demons (used interchangeably) are around too).

In other parts of the world, polytheistic cultures worship pantheons that include gods of all alignments.

If I remember my planar knowlege correctly the form of Asmodeus that everyone knows is simply an Avatar for the real being which is supposed to be hidden away from when he fell from grace. To cut to the chase... Asmodeus is supposed to represent Lucifer and the pit was formed from his fall. Somewhere on the Ninth level his true form still remains and it is the blood from his still open wounds which forms the Pit Fiends. The true form of Asmodeus is supposed to represent the evil equivalent of the creator. That true form is on a power level equal to the Lady of Pain (mentioning her is a sure fire way to get Shemeska in here :D ). His avatar is a mere fraction of his power. Perhaps they could kill his avatar but as long as their is evil in the universe they'll never be rid of him. In that way the evil SL gods grant him life. :]

This is really a stupid thing to discuss. Anything I can bring up you will have a counter for and vise versa. It is only a matter of time before a Forgotten Realms fan jumps in with how Ao could strip the power from the SL gods and make them mortal since he did the same with all of the hundreds of FR gods.

I said it before and I'll say it again... IMHO if you can't rattle of the names of the gods of a setting within the space of 15 seconds then there are too many.

I don't follow that... Asmodeus has shown up in pretty much every setting since he first appeared in the original MM. Like Corellon Latherian he is present in more than one setting. He'd have the resources of numerous material planes as well as the outer planes.

See... I'm doing it. MUST... GET... OUT... OF... TOPIC...

It's a well known fact that everyone wants to have the last word. I'll TRY to defy that if you reply. :D
