Exalted?

My experience has been making 2 charecters for the system. My rping group was going to play one, but then the FRCS came out, and the story teller for the Exalted game started DMing a FR game.

But it seemed cool and I often pass that book saying to myself "Someday I will buy that book"

I thought it looked cool when I paged through a few times in the store. It seemed that it was like DnD, but it embraced the wild, over the topness of certain parts, and thus extended that to starting characters, and realized that magic is important and so gave every character some magic tricks.

However, I thought the class, er caste, system had some rather inflexible elements, since it's much more expensive to buy out of caste skills. It actually seemed like it would be easier to build character with a good fighting skills and some sneaky skills with a DnD fighter/rogue combo than in Exalted - neither night or dawn caste is a great fit, and buying a secondary out of caste group of skills even to moderate levels is really expensive.

I've also heard that the dice pool mechanic used isn't very good.

By far I'm no expert having only played it a few times. However, I only played it a few times because I didn't like it. I felt there were things that didn't make sense. When you use your powers you glow or something else happens that makes it obvious you ar eusing your powers. Yet, some of the powers are stealth related. I created a stealth character not realizing it was pointless. So, I had a neghative first experience and never looked back.

That's simply wrong...you can use all of your Personal Essence pool, and up to three points of your Peripheral Essence, before Stealth related charms can't be used (Exalted, pg. 148). Many Exalted have Essence in the range of 6-8. Even at the low end, this gives me 9 Essence to burn on Stealth-related Charms. None of the Stealth Charms cost more than 10 Essence, and the bulk are in the 5-6 range. Somebody wasn't interpreting the rules correctly.

As for the setting for Exalted it is, in a word, enormous (this could be a skewed viewpoint...I've spent the last four years gaming in Tribe 8's setting, which is the size of Montreal...and it was plenty big for what we were doing).

When I say enormous, I mean there is a lot of breathing room. For inserting your own setting elements, for running your own stories, for doing what you want to with it. Frex, with the "hunted superheroes" issue. Solar Exalted are only in real danger in a) the Realm or b) tributaries to the Realm. The Blessed Isle and a few places on the mainland, basically. Anywhere else in the setting, the reaction is up to the Storyteller. In some places you could be worshipped as gods, seen as pawns to be used in political struggles, or seen as demons. The game is not about running around trying to hide your powers all the time.

The elements of the setting only get a cursory treatment in the main book, but Scavenger Sons fleshes it out a lot. In fact, Scavenger Sons ranks right up there with what I consider to be the best setting books of all time - Tribe 8's Vimary Sourcebook. There is a lot of variety, and the setting simply damn cool ideas (look at the write-ups for the tombs in Nexus sometime).

It might not be your cup of tea, but that doesn't mean it's not an outstanding game.

Exalted takes place at the times of the dinosaurs without the dinos. The Technocrats have lied to us. The dinos never exsisted. the world of Exalted is what you have. All of the supernatural beings from the world of Darkness are in the game but the way they were BEFORE our present age. The Fae folk are True Fae or "Pure Fae and not changelings-beings that are part human and fae. the other supernaturals races differ also.
The rules system is based on the simply, elegant and easy to learn Storytellers System. The rules are not important, the story is.
The game falls for me by the make up of the book. It's written poorly . You read about exalted this exalted that on an on till youre sick to you stomach. And the art, which I feel can make or break a game book is too anime infulence. NOT to my liking. so I didnt buy it.

I love Exalted, and when I get ahold of a copy of the Lunars sourcebook, I'm gonna gen characters and run a campaign.

It is very much like Final Fantasy sometimes, but they even mention that they were influenced by FF7 in the main rulebook.

Wil, ever run people through the Tombs of NExus?(I'm writing up stuff for them after dinner tonite).

I'm not sure if i took it right but i always saw exalted as white wolf's take on D&D. they just took thier system threw in over the top powers and thier own touch of paranoia.

personally i love the game, unfortunately my players never really seemed to get into the spirit of it.

Exalted makes a great background for BESM, if you aren't fond of the WW mechanic. Personally, it's my favourite of the WW games, by far.

Absolutely.

What's more, a stealth-related character should really be a Night Caste - who can conceal such effects even better...

Yeah, i defintely got a real anime/fantasy feel off it when i borrowed it from a friend. I thought it was very cool, although since i am not exactly a WW game system fan, i didn't think i'd ever give it a try. I worked on a D20 conversion for about i night before i realized i didn't like it enough to do all that work! :)

WE have a serious WW fan in our group these days and although we have thoroughly turned him aganist the WW system (mwahahahahhahahahahahhaa!!), i told him that Mutants & Masterminds may well be the perfect vehicle for an Exalted game. So now we wait for the delivery of M&M in the next week or so and see what everyone thinks.
