Exeunt gnomes: bang or whimper?

Wondering, do you think gnomes will simply disappear from 4E, as old-style halflings did, or will the campaign world sourcebooks account for their demise?

They'll also fart into the sending stone when they come back as a PC race in the 4E Eberron Campaign setting.
Indeed. Much like the athletic 3e halflings replaced the chubby hobbit-knock-offs, Eberron's information broker gnomes can replace the trickster/tinker archetypes from before.

Since they're still in the MM and cand be used as a playable race, and will I think it's been said they'll be in the first PHB-ish supplement anyway, they're not gone. Really, now, this has been known for quite some time.

To be fair, Eberron also makes the chubby hobbit-knock-offs viable. One of the Dragonmarked Houses are inn keepers and party hosts. That suits the hobbit.

In my campaign, Garl Glittergold will cross Yondalla and the halfling Goddess will curse the entire race with deliciousness. The first time a gnome gets caught in a fireball, everyone is going to realize exactly how tasty those little buggers smell when cooked. The race will not survive the subsequent hunting and devouring.
