I believe XP are still divided among all PCs that participated in the encounter, which would reduce the amount you would recieve as an individual. That is why characters that are slain during an encounter still gain the XP for the encounter if they are brought back to life. As for amount of XP, you can gain an amount that will gain you a single level. Anything beyond this is not counted and simply written off.
Also, the XP system is set up in such a manner that if you are defeating creatures with a CR more than 8 above your party level then something is out of balance. There is a footnote on the XP table that makes a statement to this effect.

I guess the question that arises in my mind is "why didn't the DM tell you how much exp you got?". It sounds like the question is from a player's perspective ("Been 13th and the only guy left i'm sort of needing a bit of help...") -- if your DM is throwing encounters of that nature at you, he/she ought to have some idea how much experience to award for it. If I were your DM, I would probably either A) attempt to extrapolate the correct amount of experience based on continuing the progression on the table, or 2) just award the maximum amount that DOES appear on the table (seven levels above yours, I guess *peering up at Nail's post*), ruling that any overage is lost. Perhaps the gods took a share as a penalty for such utterly disgusting excess. 
As mentioned above, the exp should be shared out amongst the party members anyway, even if they all died -- and unless things have changed since 3.0, it should be based on the average party level, which may mitigate the problem slightly (or make it slightly worse).

She is Ghost Fighter 9/Rog 1/Blackguard 10 and CR 24, also in the room were 4 Dread Wraiths which had been increase by HD. The book lists it as an EL 23 fight. The party was made up of 6 characters of around level 13. While the DMG may say that party's shouldn't be in able to overcome this sort of encounter they did in the end, they were able to prepare and had 2 clerics who were able to cast heal, which providing they hit can do massive amounts of damage even when you save for half. Don't get me wrong this was no easy fight, it used up all the resources they had and in the end Mr Bunny was the only one left alive.
As far as exp goes the chart in the dmg doesn't give you any amount saying that the fight should be too hard and that it's left at the DM's discression as to how much exp to hand out, there is nothing in the DMG on how to work it out using formulas or anything like that. However we are wondering if anyone out there has expanded on the table in the DMG to include how much exp a level 13 character should get for defeating a EL 23 fight. The Epic level handbooks lists exp for character level 21+ so that's no use here.
Saying he should get enough exp to make him one point on 15th level is way too much, and saying he should get none just cos the book says he shouldn't be able to overcome it is stupid.
