The Origins of the Elan
About 800 years ago, a group of kalashtar managed to capture a Inspired who had been very successful in hunting and slaying several of their kind.
When the kalashtar finally captured the killer, they were at odds with how to deal with him. Most simply wanted his death, while a few others, those who had lost loved ones to the Inspired's terrible wrath, favored a punishment worse than death.
One of these vengeful kalashtar, Sethritari, was a powerful telepath who had been doing studies for most of her life on the nature of the kalashtar and their origins. It was she that provided the means by which the inspired murderer would be punished.
Using a variation of the same sort of psionic fusion that created the first kalashtar, Sethritari bound the Inspired into the body of Baloc Elan, a human whose daughter had been one of the Inspired's victims.
The Inspired's quori spirit was made one with Baloc's flesh and they arose as a new creature, later called an Elan in honor of the first of their kind. Baloc's human metabolism was replaced with pure psychic energy, the quori soul providing a source of psionic power that Baloc soon realized he could manifest in different ways. In addition, part of the bonding process removed Beloc's need to sleep. The quori spirit's energies rejuvenated his body, allowing him to escape the dangers of dreaming and removing any chance of the spirit escaping back into Dal Quor. The psionic energy that coursed through his body gave him other benefits as well, such as the abilities to telekinetically deflect a strike just before it could wound him, the ability to reinforce his body against disease or poison, foresee a moment into the future, or raise an instinctual psychic defense.
While Beloc benefited from the fusion process, the quori soul imprisoned within Beloc's flesh was broken and helpless. While fully aware of everything his once human host experienced, the Inspired was cursed to forever be a mere spectator, its own energies fueling the weapon used to strike at its own kind.
As he was meant to, Baloc used his newfound powers as a weapon against the Inspired, tracking them across Khorvaire and eliminating them. His wrath meant the destruction of dozens of Inspired.
When his understanding of the psionic arts was sufficient, Sethritari taught Beloc the means to create more of his kind. With this newfound knowledge, Beloc quickly changed his tactics. He no longer wanted to destroy the Inspired he found, but to capture them. Thus was born the race of elan. With the help of the kalashtar, Beloc recruited several humans to be willing hosts for quori souls. In time, these recruits where entrusted with the secret of the elan's creation and set about creating others.
To this day, the elan work in secret. The immortality granted by the quori spirit has allowed Beloc Elan to be a guiding hand for his race for almost a millennia. The elan's only transform those humans who actively seek them out, and only then if they pass their strict requirements.
While the elan were created to be a weapon against the Inspired, recent times have led to some groups with other interests. Though there are still groups of elan who actively fight against the Inspired, there are also groups who undergo the change simply to expand their psionic potential.
