They are siblings and they have a third sibling named Planko. One day Planko fell ill with a magical chronic disease that is historically immune to clerical magic. The two had a falling out over how to raise the money needed for the medicine to treat Planko. As such, they argue over each other's methods in a clash of their contrasting ethics.

I'm the DM and a player in my campaign is a bard who's called Plunko.
He hates and is always overshadowwed by a rival called Plonko.

They have had 19 sessions in Barovia and the name Plonko came up a few times.
''Are you the famous Plonko'' or stuff similar like that.

The hatred of the bard for Plonko has grown more and more.
The group is now outside of Barovia and also here the name Plonko has been dropped.

I wonder if I can get more out of this story, leading to something (important/insignificant) around level 20.

Plonko is:
1- only ever seen by Plunko.
2- last seen by Plunko (before he was level 1) near the Sword coast. Never seen since.
3- a musician, using fringe musical instruments
4- loved by all who meet him (but have they?)
5- a name that the other characters in the group have also heard.
6- the writer of the book ''How to play the ukelele''

Maybe it's an imagination or something completely different.

If someone has a brilliant brainwave, I'd love to hear it.

There is one short 2e Ravenloft adventure revolving around a bard which you could easily mod to your needs.
It is basically a house where said bard lives, he invites the PCs to visit him and as soon as they enter the house enters a void like demiplane and if the players do not find means to escape ?til midnight or so?there they are trapped there for the next 100 years.
I think it was from one of the collections ?"tales of the crypt"? or so, but I maybe wrong.

I think a third (and fourth, etc) sibling could be used to explain plot progress.
I'll have a look ''tales from the crypt''. Maybe someone wrote a review?

If they ever meet, they should challenge each other to a game to determine which one of them is the real bard and which is the impostor. Maybe they could play...Plinko?

Since Plunko has multi-classed to Rogue you can make use of one of the absurdities of 5E where in a dance-off or instrument duel Plunko uses Expertise in his bardic skill for +12 at high level whereas Plonko, being a pure Bard, only has +6.
