Hi!

I'm thinking about the situation, if a NPC has a teleport prepared with a contingency (condition, cast if HP < 10). The PC beat them 'till the HP are under 10 the teleport fires. They disapear, but they was beaten in this fight. Will the PCs get XP???
Because they will meet them again, for another fight!

thanks in advance!

bye

They overcame the challenge by making the bad guy run away, thus they get the XP. Remember you don't have to _kill_ things to get XP.

Now if you are evil and the BBEGs succeeded to achieve their goal too, they'll get XPs too :D

Edit: Don't use lower than 10 hitpoints. That will get them killed too easily. Use lower than 30 hitpoints.

In fact, you can get XP without even FIGHTING.

Picture, an Ogre guarding a bridge. If the PC's goal is to get across the bridge -- but they don't have any money -- well, fast-talkign the Ogre into letting them cross, passes the obstacle, and the party shoudl get full XP for the encounter.

Or, if it's a band of Orcs guarding a gate the party has to get past, and they manage to SNEAK past ... again, full XP for the band of orcs. They encountered the orcs, and "beat" the obstacle those orcs posed.

Which is why traps, even puzzles, can be given a CR, and thus, can generate experience points.
