D&D General Experts type PCs, Magic Items, and Higher Fantasy

I personally wouldn't do it that way.

If I were to do it, I would go back to my Simple 4e skeleton which hybrids have 2 power sources or the OneD&D skeleton where hybrids are fully one class group.
it is more a theoretical.
Just got home. So if it were up to me and I was doing it as an equipment based system, i'd go:

Choose a class
Choose a background
Choose a species

But each would have different power sources, roles, and groupings.

So Barbarian and Ranger would both be Martial/Primal. But Barbarian would be Warrior who can be Striker or Defender but Ranger be an Expert who can be Striker or Controller.
honestly the fact the barbarian and the ranger overlap is an issue. Then again what the ranger is or should be is an endless argument

What are your thoughts?
The dependency on items is a good catch (although the Fighter at least could also be said to heavily depend on equipment), but I still think that the "experts" concept stems more from the idea of being focused on something else than combat or magic: "experts" is rather the "third group" besides "warriors" and "spellcasters". That Bard should be an expert is partly based on the fact that it has always been the most oriented to social interaction. But 5e blurred the boundaries between characters, made everyone quite effective in combat and brought a bit of magic at least as an option to every class, so grouping characters lost meaning.

That overall is due to the community strict restrictions of "sources" to be simple. Barbarian skills and tools are not really the same as Rangers still tools even among people who disagree on what the classes are.

monk is not an expert to few skills.
honestly it still needs to be ripped back to the woodwork and redone with new, better sources
